Outlook occasionally asking for password

Recommended Posts

There seems to be an issue with my workstation, I have Outlook setup to remember my password so it will automatically check my email without me confirming my password. For awhile now though even though I have the box checked for it to remember my password, it will occasionally popup the Request password window with the remember my password box unchecked. My password is in the password box, so I just click the 'remember my password' box and click OK and then everything runs fine for a bit, until sometime later when Outlook checks email and the process is repeated. This isn't a real problem just an annoyance. I would really like to have this stop happening. I'm on Windows XP Professional, running Office XP Suite and using Outlook as my default email software.

normally it happens to me when my mail server isn't responding in a timely manner. Is office updated with the latest service packs?

We have updated Office XP with all the latest service packs and patches.

It is most likely due to a account lockout in Active Directory on the Domain controller. Happens all the time here, due to that great Windows replication process.

Remedy; get your account unlocked by someone with access to AD users and computers.

I don't beleive it has anything to do with Active Directory on the Domain controller, mostly because I am not locked out of logging in. Just that the password request pops up occasionally in Outlook. I have had it checked though and AD users and computers none of the accounts are locked out. It is just my email password that keeps being requested occasionally when Outlook checks email on its own *as I have it set to do*. Doesn't happen all the time just occasionally. I have remember my password in email settings checked. But when the Request Password window pops up it has it unchecked.

Well if it isn't that you account is locked out the only other occurance of this I've personally seen is when the password for the login has expired.

I assume this isn't the case since you stated that you simply enter in your password again to fix the problem (for a time).

Maybe I'm thinking of a different dialog box from Outlook, do you happen to have a screen shot of the box showing up?

The dialog box I'm refering to asks for the username password and domain. Our you running Exchange as your mail server, if not what are you running? Are there any other symptons of the problem you are aware of? Does it happen at regular intervals? Or does it appear entirely random?

If your email account is on an exchange server, in a AD - why and the world would you need to setup outlook to remember any password? It would use your logged in account to auth to the exchange server.

Are you accessing an exchange server, or a POP/IMAP (internet) account?

This will occasionally happen if the program is trying to POP and a new request is made to POP again.

We don't have an exchange server set up, we are using Pop/IMAP for mail. The issue happens entirely random really, one day it may happen ten times, another only five, once or like a few days ago I didn't experence the issue at all. But it only happens when I have Outlook check mail on its own, If I click the Send and Recieve option I never get this issue.

Are you running the server - or is it your ISP's server? They may have it set to only allow you to check so often? Or like someone else mentioned - outlook can ask for password if there is a delay in the connection, etc..

How often are you checking mail? Every 5 minutes, 10, 20, every minute? I would suggest you lower the frequency of checking for new mail - and possible check with your ISP if you are limited to how often you can check, etc..

I'll look when I go in tomorrow, but thanks everyone so far with the suggestions. The mail server is run by our ISP, the server on site is for backups and system database.
