Aaron Sorkin HBO drama "The Newsroom"

Recommended Posts

I'm intrigued and do like HBO's dramas and Aaron Sorkin's work. However, sorry to rain on your parade, the pilot is always meant to be great. I have not seen it, but will wait until another couple of episodes air before deciding whether or not to commit.

That is why is said "Fantastic 'first' episode", and not "Fantastic show". I was intrigued enough to give a second episode a chance, and I will evaluate it from there. I do not know about you but I can generally tell if a pilot is punching above its weight, and I do not consider watching one or two episodes of a show as "commitment".

I liked the pilot of this show more than I did for Studio 60 (which I loved).

I just read some reviews and I can see what the critics are getting at. The staff in the news room did just seem to go for low hanging fruit they didn't feel like real journalists who would be digging away at a story to gain tiny morsels. They all seemed to be quite lazy and brazen and wanting to get a full scoop laid on their lap from any source possible. It did feel unrealistic but at the same time I've not worked in cable news so for all I know that is what the people are like. Sometimes reality doesn't make great TV.

But having said that I still enjoyed the show regardless of what the critics are saying about it.

i dont get why all the reviews are focusing on the journalism part of the equation. when all is said and done, it's still scripted fiction. just enjoy it for what it is...

I thought it was a very solid pilot

I'm so hooked on this. Always been an Aaron Sorkin fan, West Wing is my favorite series ever...but I really didn't think Jeff Daniels could pull this off. But he's been beyond my expectation. And Sam Waterston is absolutely fantastic as his boss.

Sorkin has done a good job by taking real-life stories and weaving them into his own screenplay. West Wing did this every now and then but it was very indirect. Hope this show lasts a few seasons :)

Finally saw the new ep, great stuff, where was this news channel and why isn't it real? I can't wait for the next ep now.

I think I'm gonna stop watching this. I really did enjoy the pilot (as I wrote earlier in this thread) but it just has failed to captivate me since then. The personal relationships between the younglings on the show are especially tiresome and do not interest me at all. I thought this would be more focused on the journalism but most of each episode is made up of some love triangle with the blonde girl which frankly bores me to sleep.

gotta agree here, I had 4 episodes to catch up one and I found my interest waning through episode 3 :(

Meh quickly losing interest in this show. Getting tired of the false back-and-forth quick conversations and characters being able to throw out facts/figures/statistics like they've got their own Wikipedia within reach. I'll probably watch the 3 remaining episodes of this season but I doubt I'll see the next.

**Spoiler for latest episode below**

Struck me as a bit weird in the latest episode focusing on Osama bin Laden that Jeff Daniels said 2,977 American people died in the Twin Towers attack when that's glaringly false considering their were people from 90 countries who died in the WTC attacks.

Obviously I'm late to this party...

A friend suggested that I watch this, and I've gone and got the whole series to get through. So far (episode 2) I'm enjoying it. Some of the comments around here though make me wonder how long I'll continue to think that though...

Let's see what happens, I guess. Then I can decide on whether I think it's a good thing or not that they're doing a second season...

The second season of HBO?s drama series The Newsroom will premiere on Sunday July 14th at 10/9c, it has been announced,

Created by Aaron Sorkin, The Newsroom centers on a cable news anchor, his new executive producer, his newsroom staff and their boss as they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal relationships. The drama series stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel and Olivia Munn. In the show?s second season, the staff of News Night chases a mysterious tip, which leads to a story that ultimately spins out of control.
