trashpickinman
that is really really stupid. what next, the dmca gonna force the keyboard makers to take the shift key off the keyboard because it promotes piracy?
Ash
Lol yeah, lets sue someone cause we are idots. They can't know much of how the operating systems work, or they would have knowing about the Shift thing.

HellBender
it's so freaking dumb. It's their fault they left in such an obvious and easy to abuse flaw. LOL yeah, and apparently they did lots of external testing, too... and had huge boasts... maybe they shouldve included in their statements, "its not fair that you press the shift key when inserting the album" :D
TurnedMyWorldToBlack
Who cares about the Shift key all you have to do is disable the auto start feature so the cd can't install it's program, not really a great anti theft device. B.

AntBug
Three days after a Princeton graduate student posted a paper...it has lost more than $10 million of its market value How do you lose $10 million in 3 days?
TurnedMyWorldToBlack
You guys seem to be dodging the violation. What violation? There were other ways around the copy protection, if you have any knowledge of computers and electronics in general. So he pointed out an easy way to do it big deal, if you own the cd you have every right to make a copy of it if you want. This is no different then the copy protection that was defeated with a black marker. B.
AgEnTsMiTh
This realy ****es me off. The guy found a very stupid and simple flaw in this companys poor programming, and they blame him for making it known, as far as I see it, the music industry should praise him for finding such a major flaw and helped them by saving money wasted on a company who obviously does not have there **** together. snocked
Lars is that you? You're brilliant. Good job at contributing an almost witty remark and nothing more to the thread. The distribution of information on how to bypass the protection is the violation.

lawtai
I'd have to agree with what was said in the article on cnet. "This is completely outrageous," said Fred von Lohmann, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group that has previously represented computer academics concerned that copyright law would impair their ability to publish. "This is not black hat (hackers') exploits he's revealing. This is Windows 101...It is relatively hard to imagine any better example of how the DMCA has been misused since it was passed five years ago." But as I said before if you disable auto start up when you put in a cd you have already defeated the copy protection. It's not that hard to do, if he hadn't posted it someone else would have, it's not like he created a program to crack the encryption he just pressed the shift key and told people about it big deal. Copy protections violates my right to fair use, so should I go sue all the companys that use it. Claim I lost money cause my cd was scratched and I had to buy a new one because I couldn't create a copy of it. LOL B.

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted October 10, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2003 That's not the violation. He exposed a flaw in their system publically. Which is supposedly against the DMCA. However, the DMCA is also the most rediculous peice of law ever conceived (except perhaps for the PATRIOT act). I mean, honestly, how can you think this kid deserved it? He posted that if you press shift during the insertion of a cd in windows, it disables the auto exec, and that also happens to disable their program using this technique. I think if the record companies hadn't have brought this up to major attention, people probably wouldn't know as much about it either....
