I cannot download Start Menu 7 because website and download mirrors not wor

Question

I could not find any information about my problem on the web,so I am posting about it here.As maybe someone else has the same problem as me. And that is I cannot download Vista Start Menu or Start Menu 7. Because the download links do not work and I cannot get onto the original site. This has been going on for over 24 hours now. But 2 days ago both websites and download links were working but not now.

I have been helping my friend install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on his Acer Windows 7 laptop. And like me he wants a Classic menu.Because that is what he is used to on Windows 7.So I told him about 2 programs Start Menu 7 and Vista Start menu that both work on Windows 8. And once he had his computer set up with Windows 8 installed,we then went to the website to download and install one of those programs.

But I found that we could not access either the Vista Start Menu website or the Start Menu 7 website. We got an message saying"webpage is not available."

See here the links are not working and you cannot access the download links-Vista Start menu-http://www.vistastartmenu.com

Start Menu 7-http://www.startmenu7.com

And so we tried other download sites that we know,Tuscows,Softpedia and the same thing happened. we could not download either of those programsThe programs would not download. It seems that the download sites connect to the actual websites where the software is hosted on by the makers. So if the website is down, you cannot download the software from another website either.

But the problem is not with mine or my friends Internet connection. As we tried the computer at another friends house and at my friends office computer and you just cannot get onto either website from any location. So those websites are down and also the people who make Vista Start Menu and Start Menu 7 also make Start menu XP and Start Menu classic. And we tried those websites and we cannot get onto those websites either the same problem.

I do not understand it as 2 days ago the we could access the website and the download links were working. What could be the problem? Has both Start Menu 7 and Vista Start Menu been discontinued? Is that the reason why we can not get onto the website or download those programs from anywhere else.

I told my friend to install Classic Shell like I have done but he wants Start Menu 7 or Vista Start Menu, because he used them on Windows 7. So does anybody know why we cannot download Start Menu 7 or Vista Start menu or get onto the website to download it from? Andrea Borman.

The site's down.

You can download it here: http://www.download3...rt-Menu-SE.html

Thread moved to Software Discussion & Support.

Yes I clicked your link but that is version 3 of Start Menu 7 not the new version 4. Which does not have the start orb. Version 4 is what I had on my computer which is the newest version.Until I changed it for Classic Shell. But my friend does not want Classic Shell he wants Start Menu 7 or Vista Start Menu.

Most download sites that you can download software from such as Softpedia connect to the actual website the software is hosted on. So if the website is down you won't be able to download it from another site. Unless they host the install er file on their site. But the only website that I know of that have the installer files on their site is C.Net. But C Net have only got the old versions of those 2 programs not the latest.

So we could download the old versions but unlike Classic Shell. Start Menu 7 and Vista Start Menu do not have a built in updater. So to update to the latest version, you are taken to the actual website. But when you get to the website, you get the error or redirect message that the webpage is not available. So you cannot update it.

But as I mentioned before all of the other start menu programs websites are not working, you cannot get onto any of them. And there is no message when you try to access just webpage not available. and it does seem too much of a coincidence that all of the websites,Start Menu 7,Vista Start Menu,Start Menu XP and Classic Start Menu are all no longer there. Yet they were 2 days ago.

Maybe they have stopped making or discontinued the software. And the problem is that a lot of start menu programs do not work on Windows 8. So there are not a lot of choices. Andrea Borman.

OP ... I'd recommend sticking with Classic Shell. Install it for your friend, then at least he'll

still have a proper classic Start button and proper classic Start menu in the proper place,

especially if there's a chance the other two program have been discontinued.

Footnote:

To those rabid lovers of the Metro tiled Start screen on W8CP ... Don't. Just don't, OK?

OP ... I recommend sticking with Classic Shell to restore the traditional functionality of the Start

button and proper Start menu that have been taken away in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

first sentence of last paragraph of OP
I told my friend to install Classic Shell like I have done but he wants Start Menu 7 or Vista Start Menu, because he used them on Windows 7.

I told my friend to go for Classic Shell instead of the other programs, as it is a better alternative. But he does not want Classic Shell. He says he wants the other programs. But each person has their own preferences.

But if the software makers have closed their website down for maintenance or something.Or they have closed it down because they have discontinued their software.Would it not have been more thoughtful of them to tell us that. Just like when I was using Flock browser. The website told us they would be discontinuing the browser and gave us the date when that was going to happen. So we knew where we stood. But when you go onto the website of the 2 programs that my friend wants you just get "cannot find the webpage." Not very helpful at all.

But are you having the same problem as me getting onto those websites? Or is the problem just at my end? You know my Internet location,I am in England.Andrea Borman.

Oh, I see. I've had a look, but I can't find anywhere that's hosting version 4. It looks like you'll just have to wait for the site to come back up.

The sites are definitely down. I'm sure they'll be back up soon though.

Thank you for that info. So it is not my Internet location and it is not my Internet connection that is the problem.Because you said you have just tried the site and you had the same problem also. So at least now I now it is not just me that has this problem. I expect there will be more Windows users who want to get onto those sites to download the software, but cannot. So my friend and I are not the only ones. Andrea Borman.

I found the Pro 4.01 version that was free on giveawayoftheday.com - but as that offer is no longer it would be classed as warez me thinks

Well the people who make Start Menu 7 and Vista Start Menu. Also make Start Menu Classic and Start Menu XP. But if you check out these links you will see that you cannot get onto any of the 4 websites.

http://www.startmenu7.com

http://www.vistastartmenu.com

http://www.startmenuclassic.com

http://www.startmenuxp.com

Start Menu 7 is now called Start Menu X and hosted on the same web address as Start Menu 7. But now it seems that the company who make these 4 start menu programs has closed down or discontinued those programs. As it is very strange that only 2 days ago we could get onto those websites and download all 4 programs from other sites. But now we cannot get onto the websites or download them at all.Andrea Borman.

Thanks for the download. I will tell my friend about it when i see him. But one thing that people who are using this software should bear in mind is that Start Menu 7 or Vista Start Menu are now no longer supported by the makers.Because the company who makes it has closed their website and gone to ground. You can still continue to use the software if you still have it or can find somewhere to download it from. But it will not be secure as it will not be supported or updated.

Most people including my friend use the free version of Vista Start Menu and Start Menu 7. But some people are using the Pro versions which are the paid versions.

And I feel sorry for those users who have just purchased the paid version. Because they have paid for a software. And this company has closed their website and up and gone. And so any user that has paid for this software that has had to or needs to reinstall their operating system. Well, they have paid for the Pro version but they won't be able to download the software.Because the website is not there any more. The company has taken those users money and left users in the lurch with no forwarding web address.

So some people have paid for this software, but can no longer use it because they cannot download it.That says it all about the software company does it not. Andrea Borman.

Update-I have just been onto all four websites, just now. And both Vista Start Menu and Start Menu 7 websites are back on and working. And also the other two websites for Start Menu Classic And Start Menu XP are also working again.

So that is good news for my friend and anyone else who wants those two programs. So we can now go back onto those websites and download those programs. They have been updated and there are new versions. So my problem is resolved. Andrea Borman.
