glazzz
If i download a tv episode that i wasn't around to watch, am i violating some law? And if so, then why is Tivo legal? I don't really understand this, so what do you guys think? do you have any experience getting into trouble with this? I know that if you download things like "the sopranos" or "six feet under", it is different because you have to pay to get HBO, but if I download something from ABC or NBC, then what copyright am i breaking since these are general cable channels? Ash
Yes it is illegal... and in the face of some of the entertainment industry TiVO is illegal too. Well not really illegal but the act of being able to edit out commerical when playing the episode they consider to be illegal. When downloading an episode off the net, it does not cintain advertising, therefore nobody makes money off their work, thus its piracy. What I don't get is with the huge interest in downloading episodes that you can either not get in your area or you missed, why these tv stations don't offer downloadable episodes with inserted commericals that you can get for free? I mean there are shows I know i'd download if that was being done.
glazzz
well i really bring this up because the alias season 1 dvd's came out last month, and i'm totally hooked, but the season 2 dvds dont' come out until december :( season 3 is on cable right now, so i'd like to catch up to be able to know what's going on. Ash
Hehe yeah I know what ya mean. Technically its illegal, but I don't think they will sue you. I may be downloading the series Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, even though I disagree with downloading like that but the show was cancelled 2 years ago, I don't see repeats being played and I doubt there will ever be DVDs of the series, or i'd just wait for those. Toxikk Veteran Posted October 10, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2003 it should be closed cuz there is a thread about this already... someone forgot to use the search feature :p https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...0894&hl=illegal
glazzz
this thread should probably be closed since it is about warez... sorry, i wasn't asking for access to download it or how to obtain it illegally, i was just questioning the legality ( or illegality) of the act, and i'm pretty sure i didn't stray from the rules. "For clarity we show zero tolerance for spam, advertising, useless and off topic posts, raising post count, warez (links) & cracks and aiding this; requests or posts that discuss circumvention of protection mechanisms, racism, threatening (citing), victimization or hateful posts." I figured with this being a 'discussion' board i would be able to ask a simple question without everyone flying off the handle to preach about warez, geez. Sorry for not searching toxikk, i'll try that next time. One thing about the difference between sporting events and tv episodes though, in a nfl game for instance they state that any unauthorized copying/playing/yadda yadda without expressed written consent is illegal, but I have never seen a disclaimer like this on a regular television show. This also brings into question the legality of a Tivo device, unless you are granted written consent with your Tivo purchase, how is the device legal?
