Slow LAN suddenly.

Recommended Posts

Hello and good evening.

I have a serious problem with my LAN since yesterday. I have two computers with WinXP Pro connected through an ADSL-Router (3com 812 Office Connect). They both have access to Internet and also a LAN connection using the Workgroup feature.

Yesterday I changed the Motherboard of one of the computers, so I reinstalled Windows from scratch on that computer, updated with all patches, drivers etc. But now every time I want to transfer something from one computer to another, I get no more than 10-70kbyte per second, even though it's a 10Mbit connection. It states a net usage of no more than 25%. I have tried switching drivers, halfduplex instead of fullduplex, but nothing. I tried different file types, also big ones where the transfer should be stable. In fact the transfer speeds vary, at times even interrupt for a few moments and then go on.

I didn't change any other hardware, except that the old Motherboard had a LAN-Card and the new Motherboard has OnBoard-LAN. But that shouldn't make any difference, no?

Does anyone have a clue why the transfer speed is so slow? I don't think it is the cable, since before it worked just fine. Any way to find out what is wrong, a testing program perhaps? Or anything inside Windows I can try?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I deactivated the LAN-Settings, then the OnBoard-LAN and plugged the other LAN-Card into the computer, started up, configured it and... it works just fine. 70-80% net usage.

So does that mean the OnBoard-LAN is broken ? It's a new MSI-Board. Or could it be the driver?

It could be the driver, and it also could be the hardware. I would call their tech support (I know, MSI's support is horrible) and see what they have to say, it might be a known issue with that board and they may have a fix for it. If not, I would go trade in your board. I have never been a fan of on board cards (IE: Lan, Video).
