Jay
I'm moving to be closer to family, and neither cable nor dsl is available at my new address. What options (if any) do I have for avoiding the 56k nightmare?
Daedroth
ADSL...is your other option. The speeds on ADSL will depend on a number of things, such as how far from the exchange the address is, how many people are on that exchange, etc.

Thanks, though!

I knew about HughesNet, but I was really trying to avoid using them if at all possible. I've heard/read nothing but bad things about the company scamming customers. +BudMan MVC Posted April 12, 2012 MVC Share Posted April 12, 2012 yeah sounds like your only option is going to be going with 3G/4G type access or satellite. Does your cell phone work there? If so then the 3G/4G should be an option. They cell routers you drop your 3G/4G card into and it provides access to your whole house, etc. Its going to be WAY cheaper than a sat hookup as well. +BudMan MVC Posted April 12, 2012 MVC Share Posted April 12, 2012 Do a simple google for 3G routers. Or look to see if your current phone company provides internet cards. You have never seen the cards you plug into say your laptop that give you internet access everywhere? For example here is a wrt54g router designed to plug your 3G wireless card into. http://homesupport.c...outers/WRT54G3G Who is your current phone provider? Do you have a data plan on it? Some routers you just need to plug your sim card into, others you plug in the card you get from your provider, etc. etc.

I don't bother with a mobile because it has always been an unnecessary expense. Skype's phone service has always been a much cheaper and more convenient alternative. Guess that may be changing in the near future, though. TY for the info!
Ridlas
Could try Wimax or other wireless standards.

TY for the info! you dont need a mobile phone, just get one of those G3data dongles that connect to the usb port on your pc, or if you prefer to connect wirelessly and are the only one using the connection go for one of thoe MiFi dongles insted, its the same as the g3dongle but the connection to your laptop can be wired or wireless
+BudMan MVC Posted April 13, 2012 MVC Share Posted April 13, 2012 Yeah you don't need a phone - I just figured you could check with who your phone provider is for adding that service. WATF does not have a mobile these days -- kind of hard to carry skype around with you ;) But hey more power to you to going this long without a phone.
