mrmumbles
Just wondering if anyone is currently using a good spam filtering/blocking program for a POP account. For some reason recently my mail account is now getting full of rubbish, some of it pretty offensive and it would be nice to get rid of it. Any help would be appreciated, Cheers. NetRyder
Thunderbird and Outlook 2003 have built-in Bayesian filtering that is amazingly accurate at detecting spam. POPfile also uses the same technique, and can be used with any other email client.

mAcOdIn Veteran Posted October 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 11, 2003 I really like SAproxy(based on spam assasin and uses filters) and Spampal(which uses blacklists). Both approaches work pretty good, SAproxy catches less in it's defualt than spampal but never deleted something I wanted, spampal catches much more with it's defualt but classified alot of my newsletters as spam. Both are free and both allow you to add any email or domain to a whitelist so you can keep messages from being classified as spam.

+Elі Subscriber² Posted October 12, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 12, 2003 (edited) ChoiceMailOne is the KING of anti-spam software, It works on the base that any person you don't know MUST register first ( fill out a short web based form with name, reason to email you and a code ) to be able to send you mail, This works great for me, I have ZERO spam on my inbox, works with different Outlook accounts, works with most email programs and e-mail protocols. Here's a screenshot of version 2.0 and Check it out, you wont regret it here's the URL! http://www.choicemailone.com Edited October 12, 2003 by Ely
mtrftw
yeah, that'd work, but it seems a bit obtrusive.
+Elі Subscriber² Posted October 13, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 13, 2003 Hey norky, not really, Once you learn how to manage the program, its VERY easy to manage it, You can easily create rules to allow messages from whole domains to come through normally to your inbox, ie: mailing lists, You can also keep an eye on the Unknown Senders list, which you can look on my screenshot above where you will see the full list of unknown people, sorted by date/email/domain/username at your like. The program also has so many features I would really not like to post them all here, One I love is an AWAY system which let's you send an email auto response to your friends when you are away, still you can tell the program not to send any away messages to specific domains or addresses. It's a very easy to manage once you play with it a bit.
theWalrus
i use a complicated system of 5 different email accounts. registering for crap goes to an old hotmail account that i clean out every couple of days (it gets about 150 messages a day), then based on importance, a site or person will get my good hotmail account, or one of my three ISP email accounts. then when i feel like seeing where spam comes from, i just use a redirect with my domain name hosting. like for neowin, i'd do neowin@thoselog.com, then anybody that emails me at that address will end up in my catch all ISP box, and i'll know neowin is selling my info to people. i probably should trim my system down...
