Strange issue with router

Recommended Posts

I've got a belkin router thats been doing something odd. I have to download several large files off of my works website and I'm having the strangest problem. I make an attempt to do the download overnight and when I wake up, the download is going at 0kb/s. It isn't their site either as I can no longer connect to any websites at all. I will still be connected to Steam/Ventrilo and be able to use those applications just fine. A simple restart of the router fixes the problem, but is there a way I can prevent the problem completely? I've got almost 400gb to download and after a few gigs every night it does this and it'll take eternity to finish if I can't fix it.

Added note I tried downloading a large torrent file to see what happens. I managed to download a 300gb torrent without this happening at all.

Tried a firmware update for the router ?

What is the actual model of it, maybe you can try an alternative firmware like DD-WRT

Just sounds like a buggy router/firmware that can't handle such large files

DDWRT, duct tape and pringles cans

Your router hits the connection limit set by the manufacturer, Steam is a really nasty ****** because it opens a boatload of UDP connections to servers when scanning them.

For example I had an ancient DIR-635 from DLink a few years back that had a cap of 1,000 connections in total - once it hit the limit, the only way to establish new connections would be to wait for the old ones to time out (usually 300 seconds)

Well how come I can download 300gb torrents but in this case when downloading about 2000 30mb files it does after only 20-30 files. I just downloaded swtor and another game I'm beta testing that was nearly a 40gb download and neither of them cause this.

It doesn't boot me from the Internet entirely. Only from web pages. I'm still able to use every single other app just fine.

Torrents use a different connection, webpages use HTTP unlike p2p

What model is the router

Not sure. I'm at work for the next 8 hours. Any way I can check remotely from here? I have a remote connection.

As for a firmware update, it is the most up'to'date version.

If you can remote into a web browser and load the router IP 192.168.x.x it should tell you on its web settings page

Type the router model into the search bar and pick which revision yours is

http://www.dd-wrt.co...router-database

I`m trying to find out which chipset it has so you can grab the latest version from the FTP here

http://www.dd-wrt.co...other-downloads

Flashing utility

http://www.dd-wrt.co...000+Flashing%2F

------ F5D7231-4_v2000_sercomm_dd-wrt.bin ---------

1. Install Sercomm utility

2. Reset the router to defaults

2. Upplug router, press reset button and keep it pressed while plugging in the power.

Release it when lan leds turn off. Power and Connected led must blink. This means upgrade mode.

3. Start Sercomm utility - let it find your router. Then upgrade it with F5D7231-4_v2000_sercomm_dd-wrt.bin

4. When router reboots wait 30s, then press reset button for 5s (until power led turns off)

5. You should have dd-wrt at 192.168.1.1
