China to co-produce, host part of the Marvel film's shoot.

Iron Man 3 will be co-produced and filmed in part in China, it was announced today. Does this mean the Mandarin is definitely the villain? We'll see.

Here's the press release:

The Walt Disney Company China, Marvel Studios and DMG Entertainment today announced the intention to co-produce IRON MAN 3 in China. Under the arrangement, DMG Entertainment will make an investment in the production of IRON MAN 3, manage the Chinese co-production process, and jointly produce the film in China. The Chinese portion of IRON MAN 3's production will run through DMG Entertainment in coordination with Marvel Studios' production and creative teams. DMG will also distribute IRON MAN 3 in China in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company China.

IRON MAN 3 will be the third movie in the billion-dollar plus franchise from Marvel and stars a returning cast including Robert Downey Jr. (as billionaire inventor Tony Stark) Gwyneth Paltrow (as Pepper Potts) and Don Cheadle (as James "Rhodey" Rhodes). IRON MAN 3 is produced by Kevin Feige and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D'Esposito, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz. The film is being directed by Shane Black who is working on the script with Drew Pearce. The film releases in the United States on May 3, 2013, and is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in all territories worldwide other than in China (which is being distributed by DMG Entertainment) and Germany/Austria (which is being distributed by the Tele Munchen Group).

"The popularity of the Marvel franchise globally creates a huge opportunity to deliver fans yet another action packed film," said Stanley Cheung, Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company, Greater China. "The co-production of IRON MAN 3 in China is testimony to the importance of this audience to Disney and the local industry capability to deliver a blockbuster title," he added.

"We look forward to working alongside DMG to bring IRON MAN to the Chinese marketplace in a significant way. We are confident that Marvel's stories will continue to be enjoyed by Chinese audiences, and adding a local flavor, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China's fast-growing film marketplace," said Rob Steffens, General Manager of Operations and Finance for Marvel Studios.

"Our collaboration with Disney and Marvel marks a milestone in the global entertainment landscape, as this signifies the first multi-billion dollar franchise to be produced between Hollywood and China," said Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG Entertainment. "The IRON MAN franchise has been a major success worldwide, and we look forward to pushing the series to new heights with IRON MAN 3. The movie will further build upon its compelling storyline, and feature the hottest A-list stars, and spectacular action, which will resonate well both globally and in China, the second largest box office market in the world."

The first installment of IRON MAN lifted off with high-speed, high-flying action when jet-setting industrialist Tony Stark survives an unexpected attack and escapes by building a high-tech robotic suit of armor. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. Straight from the pages of the legendary comic book, Iron Man is a hero who is built?not born?to be unlike any other and made US$581 million at the global box office when released in 2008. Based on Marvel's iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN 2 continued the story of the 2008 summer box office blockbuster IRON MAN, and made US$624 million at the global box office when released in 2010. Now, IRON MAN 3 continues the story with a new chapter that will deliver more heart-pounding action than ever before. Marvel Studios' IRON MAN 3 will find Tony Stark with his back against the wall, facing his most fearsome foes yet.

Shooting is expected to commence in May in the United States and begin location filming in China in late summer 2012.

Disney and Marvel have tapped Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) for the female lead of Iron Man 3. The powers that be have moved quickly to initiate talks with Hall, as the previous frontrunner for the role, Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), turned them down only yesterday, citing scheduling issues. All the better for Hall, who can prepare for her role as a ?sexy scientist? who rivals Robert Downey Jr.?s Tony Stark in intelligence. The third installment will feature the return of Downey Jr. after his scene-stealing turn in The Avengers, along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Guy Pearce will join the fun and Sir Ben Kingsley is on board to play the villain. Production on the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 starts this month in North Carolina before heading off to China en route to a May 3rd, 2013 release date.

Variety reports that Hall is currently in talks with Disney/Marvel to play the role of a scientist who plays a pivotal part in the creation of nanotechnology known as Extremis. The tech, which winds up in the hands of terrorists, is a carrier for a viral outbreak that causes considerable damage, especially to anyone who happens to be wearing a high-tech suit of battle armor. The plot for Iron Man 3 will draw elements from the Warren Ellis? six-issue series, ?Iron Man: Extremis.?

Deadline report that Shame actor James Badge Dale has signed on to star in Iron Man 3 for director Shane Black. Apparently he would play Eric Savin, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army who becomes the cyborg Coldblood after stepping on a land mine.

Anyone else excited for Shane Black writing/directing this? Tony Stark as a character really fits with his style (Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) imo. Could be great.

After the revival of Tony Starks character in Avengers I am excited again for Iron Man 3 - I was really let down by Iron Man 2 (maybe is was just a bad script for Downey) or maybe I felt he wasnt as strong as Mickey Rourke or Sam Rockwell. But he really shined in Avengers so hopefully that carries into this one. heres to waiting ..

New IRON MAN 3 Details, Filming Locations, Two Minor Cast Additions And More Revealed

Following reports that Chinese actor-singer Andy Lau had landed a Scientist role in Marvel Studios' next outing post-The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Hong-Kong-based newspaper Apple Daily has confirmed the role, in addition to more production details. Praising the amount of screen time Andy will supposedly have, the report adds that Chinese actresses Fan Bingbing and Yang Mi are joining the Shane Black-directed threequel as as Andy?s wife and assistant respectively. What's rather more interesting in the report (transcribed via AndyLauSounds) says:
The film will have location shooting in Beijing and Shanghai, it will narrates that the daughter of Robert Downey Jr.?s friend was kidnapped and brought to China, in order to save his friend?s daughter, he flew over from America to China to seek help from Andy to strengthen his abilities to fight The Mandarin. You will see Iron Man fly over The Great Wall of China, National Palace Museum & other landmarks in Shanghai May 2013

Although veteran actor Ben Kinglsey's role has yet to be disclosed, the report lists The Mandarin. Suggesting why the villain won't be of Chinese descent, a la his source material, the reports explains:

In order not to hurt the feelings of Western and Chinese audience, the story will not focus so much on the villain?s background as not to display the Chinese as evil. [The production] had already got approval from the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in order to be shot, all contents that harms Chinese image had been ?removed?, this explains why the villain will be a bit different from the original comic

I think IronMan 2 went to places with the character that it would be wrong for this version of him to ignore, but they have been addressed, and we can move on, as seen in Avengers :)

US filming is taking place here in Eastern North Carolina, I was going to go to the casting call but I got injured at work and was not able to make it. Looking forward to this movie and if they are close by I will see if I can snap some shots :)

I've seen all the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers, I'm sure as hell not going to miss any of them after it.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Jon Favreau has signed up to return as Happy Hogan in the Shane Black helmed Iron Man 3. There had already been talk of him perhaps making some sort of appearance, but this confirms those earlier reports. It is also a pretty clear sign that there is no bad blood between Favreau and Marvel Studios after the mixed critical response - which many blame on Marvel's decision to include a few too many The Avengers related easter eggs - to the hugely successful Iron Man 2, and his decision not to return to helm the third instalment of the franchise. And if this report isn't confirmation enough for you that he will indeed return, check out a Tweet from Favreau earlier today.

Variety reports that Ashley Hamilton is in talks to play the villainous Firepower in Iron Man 3, yet another villain Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man will presumably face off against in the upcoming threequel. The role is described as being a minor one, so whether or not he will actually suit up as the armoured bad guy remains to be seen. In the comic books, Jack Taggart takes part in a government program (Project: Firepower) to control rogue super beings, and was trained on a simulator learning to operate an experimental suit in order to take down Iron Man. The film is reportedly based on the "Extremis" storyline.

Wow so if it's actually based off Extremis, they could totally go with Stark having the Iron Man armor in his DNA/body (or however he did it, I don't remember lol long time ago now) which would be awesome. Also, creepy.

According to Latino Review, Ben Kingsley will play the Mandarin, but ?he?s more a veiled threat as a silent partner to Guy Pearce?s [scientist] Aldrich Killian. Killian is the man inventing Extremis and putting it into his ?Extremis army? of multiple super-powered individuals.? Those super-powered individuals could very well be Coldblood (Dale) and Firepower (Hamilton), who get their powers out of the Extremis project.

CBM reports, ?Mandarin had a set of twins that did most of his dirty work for him. Another source who had visited EUE/Screen Gems Studios told us that the sets they were building included Chinese storefronts,? but LR says that?s ?not exactly true.? I trust Latino Review more than Comic Book Movie.
