DVR software for PC

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

I have a very important project that I'm working on where I'm trying to figure

out an economical solution for offering DVR systems to homes and businesses

alike. My idea instead of having DVR systems setup with a stand-alone expensive DVR system.

I know I can google dvr software for pc but what I'm trying to figure out is how to turn windows xp/vista/7 computer into a DVR system that works just like a stand-alone DVR but that also works with a video card with multiple video outputs...but without having them shell out money for a DVR package. This way one can have the DVR software running in the background while they work on the PC for other things and have the output of the DVR monitoring coming from the cameras to another monitor. I'm also thinking the software should have password protection.

So, my question is what's the best software for this? My next question will probably be "how do you configure the program to work with the video card with multiple video outputs?" but I'll start with that.

So you want us to tell you how to do this, so you can sell it and make money?? So your business model is something like this.

1) Ask how to do thing I want to do on neowin

2) Get instructions on how to do such thing from nice people on neowin

3) Sell this info to other people

4) Profit!

Economical?

Hmm....

Windows Media Center? (assuming Windows).

Customer has tuner card? Use software from the TV tuner card.

Customer doesn't have TV tuner card? Buy card and use included software.

Customer needs CableCard? Purchase that.

In other words, you need to know what the customer has, what the customer needs, and then work from there.

To be honest I don't see a market for this idea anyway.. The FREE software sc302 linked too works great for someone that has the IP camera's already, or buys them.

As to a stand alone -- you can find them for like $200 that come with 4 camera's and stand alone system, etc. That is pretty freaking CHEAP!! This would be a better solution to be sure than having my PC working on recording videos while I am playing say a game, watching some video or downloading something, etc.

If I want to watch what is going on with my camera's -- most of these systems allow for remote viewing. So could pop that up in a window on my current screen, or if I have multiple screens - place it on one of those while I do whatever else I am doing on my computer.. Which is just a minor use of my cpu and disk vs having it record multiple streams to my hard drive while trying to use my computer ;)

Here is better business model

1) Ask customer what they want to be able to do.

2) Suggest canned solution that meets their needs

3) Setup solution for them!!

4) Profit!

Don't you mean this---

But in all seriousness you might consider going the Linux route...

This might be cheaper just to donate a few of your profits to the continued development....

However you still would have to-- Setup Camera's -- Provide Support -- and Install software.

You still need to invest in the multi-input video card....

The problem you might run into --

Sometimes that card only is sold with that Expensive software...

Now if you could figure out how to get it to install and run on a Pi then you may have a cheap solution.

The 200$ stand alone seems like a better deal though.

Good Luck--
