VanAlex
Hi! Fist of all, there is no point telling me to ask the ISP for the correct drivers. The 3rd world country I'm living at has a very special way of working...To give you an ideia, they provide a 24/7 DSL service , but there is no one working during the weekends or hollidays... So if the DSL service goes down for any reason, you just have to wait until monday ... naturally.... :pinch: The reason I'm asking the question on this topic is that I had to figure out the VPI/VCI settings for my self (And with the help of some neowinians) since I got my DSL modem from another country. Everything was working very well for a week until a few days ago, speeds started to degrade, and errors opening webpages became more common. Now, since yesterday the speed reported in the connection is 256 K but actually DU meter and flashget will report download speed at a maximum of a 64 K link. I know this guys in the ISP are not very bright , and I know the service is new, they are still messing with it, but could this be only their fault? or could the VPI/VCI settings I configured have anything to do? Because it's strange to have such a well defined download limit of 7 KB/s for two days when I used to Have around 32 KB/s. This is the sort of questions and problems the ISP should investigate but since it is weekend they are probably all drinking or at the beach (a technician actually told me they have no one working during the weekends....great service). Another thing is, I probably allready know more about networking then they do....Trust me..it's the 3rd world...We are on our own. It's not the first time I have to teach them how to correct their systems. Anyway thanks in advance for any input.
RadishTM Veteran Posted October 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 11, 2003 Your ISP maybe doing maintenance on your DSL, your VPI/VCI settings should be right, so it's only the quality of the line that is letting you down - or the distance you are away from your local exchange .... Radish?
VanAlex
The distance is okay since I was previously with a 100% connection, just this last 2 days I can't download anything at more then 7/8 KB/s , when previously I downloaded at 32 KB/s..... This guys at the ISP are completely clueless....It has it's charm living in a country in development.
kairon
If you didn't change any settings during the time your internet was working fine then I don't see why its not your ISP. Sounds like a terrible situation. Where is Luanda?
VanAlex
Hehe.....Africa.....Angola.....Luanda
MxxCon
VPI/VCI don't affect performance. if you have incorrect VPI/VCI values your dsl just won't work. it's either ON or OFF, not a little bit on :)
bud1979
MxxCon is correct VPI/VCI have to be the same as the DSLAM of the provider. It is kinda like a virtual circuit
VanAlex
Ok thanks.....Finally the weekend is over and I'll be able to ask the ISP guys why I spent it all with a 1/4 of the speed I should have.
VanAlex
Just to keep you guys posted....Since I downloaded over my limit the ISP limited my speed to 64K until the end of the month...=) ...Good One. Everyone told me they were no controlling the download limits yet, but apparently that is no the case.
