Problem connecting with someone over WAN

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I have a friend I play usually on PS3 and for a while now I have a lot of trouble joining any game where she's host and she has trouble joining any game where I'm host

-We don't have any problem joining each other when a 3rd party server is involved or when we both join someone else's rooms/lobbies or whatever

-We used not to have this problem at all a few months ago and we both did not change ISP ever since, she still has AT&T DSL and I have Comcast Cable

Here's her speedtest if it can help:

here's mine:

-We both have a static WAN IP

-I can't ping her but she can ping me.

-I tried traceroute to see whats the problem

hers looks like this:

and completes successfully

but mine:

seem to take a completely different way and get lost on the way, so the problem seems to be on my end?

Do you guys think there's something I omitted? like a firewall or something or could it be my ISP just routing wrong?

I don't have this problem with anyone else I know including people that live even further away than her, and my network knowledge is pretty basic so there might be something I'm missing.

We do manage to connect like 1/20 times, but when we do and I try traceroute right away I get the same results.

And what nat do you have listed in your ps3?

This is what causes connections to each other a problem. Also you need to allow ping on your router if you want her to ping you. Which is good thng for games to be able to work.

I have NAT 2 on my PS3, I'll make her check hers, I'll also check my router settings.

edit1: "Allow Allow to Ping WAN port WAN,* LAN,10.10.0.1 ICMP,8" is checked

I'll give you more info later.

edit2 : She has NAT type 2 on her PS3 too, I think I should have her check her router too since I'm the one that isn't able to ping her while she's able to ping me

In the game your playing what do you show ?Open, Moderate or Strict? -- To host games I do believe you going to want it to show Open!

This can be a bit tricky depending on router, and if you using UPnP, etc. I got my son's setup - but have not dealt with it for a while.

If I recall correctly open can connect to open or moderate, moderate can connect to open or moderate, strict can only connect to open.

So depending on what level you have open, moderate or strict and who is trying to host the game and what level they have would determine if you can connect or not.

And yeah your going to want both sides to answer to pings.. lots of routers default to blocking this (stupid!) Some call it "block anonymous wan requests" or something like that which makes it confusing to users if you ask me.

How about "allow ping or icmp reply" as a better description ;)

btw - quick google found this good writeup on the different nat levels in ps3

Thanks for your help so far.

The only game I have who displays the NAT Type is Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 3, whcih shows my NAT as Open, unfortunately she doesn't have it so I can't compare, but according to the chart on the website you linked it should mean that if I host, whether her NAT is Open, Moderate or Strict she should be able to get it, which she hasn't.

Anyway I tried to make her look into her AT&T Router settings and I can't figure out which part the option to see if the router is accepting ICMP requests/reply is at.

I asked her to take some screenies to see if it can help

what is the exact model number of that router - see the device tab, show a screen shot of that so can look up the manual.

Do you have UPnP enabled on your router - then it should set you to open yes. And correct if your open, she should be able to connect to you even if she is strict, etc.

But just because your open with call of duty does not 100% mean your open in some other game. Could be bug in UPnP, could be ports are forwarded else where... Yes if UPnP is opening up your ports for cod, then I would assume it would open them up for your other games yes.

So your friend is mentally challenged?? So three options show OFF, so two of those sub screens. But the option that is listed as ON, the advanced firewall -- no why would they want to see that screen??

Device tab with System Information subscreen :

My router UPnP settings:

Not sure what you mean with the last part but it might be my fault since I did ask her to screenshot all of the subscreens regardless of if they were ON or OFF on the main screen

Just looking over that manual now.. Gawd that thing seems like a POS!!!

I would suggest you put it in bridge mode, or passthrough seems like and run some other router! Everything I google to do with that thing, everyone says is a POS!!! ;)

Welp, time to tell her to invest in a new router so we can get this bridge mode going then.

Thank you for all your help, btw any brand of router you would advise her to buy?
