LinkSys Router BEFSR41

Recommended Posts

I just got a LinkSys Router BEFSR41 yesterday. But I am havig some issues with it. The router works fine for a while but then loses all internet access. I have to into the settings and save, I don't have to change anything, just save. Internet access is then restored...until this happens again within 20 minutes, then I repeat the process. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Not sure if this is related, if I use a network hub instead of the router...

Cable Modem ====> Hub ====> PC

...then hub is flashing the "collision" light, but it still works. What is "collision"?

in the setup tab

there should be a keep alive or redial option at the bottom

try that

is the router disconnecting from the server?

after you get disconnected or internet isn't working anymore

go into the router and check the status tab to make sure its not a connecting issue

if not, I would suggest disabling the DHCP option in the router (if its not already)

Oh-no! Now the new one is doing it, but not as often. Is there a config setting somewhere that is doing this?

your cable connection might not be strong enough the nand the modem is losing the signal.

It might be the modem. I have a disconnection problem right now and it's my modem. I'm gonna try live with it for a while. Last time my modem broke it took two months of tech support calls to get a new one

Two months? Thats awful. I work for Comcast and if you suspect your modem is crapped out, bring the modem and power supply (and any cds etc.) to any local lobby before 6 pm and get another one. Don't wait for a tech to bring you one, go to the lobby... its called a modem-swap.

One other thing: I own this same router, but its the 'old' one. You can tell if its the 'old' style because the lights are lined up vertically on the front and there are five ports on the back. The 'new' style has only 4 ports on the back and a Cisco symbol on the front left panel. These 'new' routers are crap, especially with win xp.

I have never has a single problem with my cable modem before. It was hooked up directly to the hub before I got this router. Here is what I know...

When the router cuts off, I only lose internet connection. The LAN, which runs through the router, stays online. When I check the status page after the router cuts off, it says my IP is 0.0.0.0 which is crap. DHCP is disabled by default. I am so close to throwing this piece of tech junk out the window and going back to my collision hub.

If the IP address is missing or returns a 0.0.0.0 IP, then the network interface is not operational. Possible causes for this are:

Cable modem has just been connected and hasn't yet successfully obtained IP-usually will default to 169.254.x.x IP

The Ethernet card (or USB driver) is not working.

Required drivers are not installed. Check documentation for the card.

There is not a working Ethernet/USB connection between the PC/Mac and the cable modem. Check cable and plugs, check Ethernet LINK lights are lit at both ends.

User is running Windows NT/2000/XP or Linux, and the DHCP Client process is not running.

User is running Windows 95, or later versions of Windows with APIPA disabled, and the DHCP client failed to obtain an IP address: continue reading the next section.

Maybe this will help...

Most likely it's the "Keep Alive" setting.. I had the same problem with mine (using DSL service) until I set the "Max Idle Time" and the Keep Alive settings. Never had the problem since.

Here's a screen snap of the settings that work for my connection, (your milage may vary... :p )

dude swap that cable modem, Linksys routers are picky with modems, you wont get a refreshed IP from your ISP, thats why you lose your connection, is your modem RCA brand? theres an issue with RCA and linksys, read about it here:

There are also forums dedicated to ISP names, you can probably find yours here:

good luck

sounds to me like your having a problem renewing your wan IP address. When you do get an outside IP address - what does the dhcp remaining time state under wan on the linsys status page?
