Itunes -- Why are about 2/3 of my songs checked off in my music library?

Question

Every time I open my itunes up, it goes to my Library/Music.

All my songs are listed there, and about 2/3 of them have checks in the check mark column. My question is, what does this check mean, and why are they checked? I thought maybe they were the ones I uploaded to the cloud for itunes match, but I matched my entire library,

They are the ones that you've either Checked or Unchecked yourself with the exception of new songs being added. When adding new songs to iTunes, they will be Checked automatically.

The Checked/Unchecked is use for syncing (if you selected 'Sync only checked songs') and for songs you do or do not want to play in Genius or other playlists.

I thought they were the ones that sync to your other iDevices... Didn't know the unchecked ones wouldn't play back in genius.. seems counter-productive to me to have purchased a song to NEVER hear it.

I actually *love* that feature. I usually buy full albums and/or fully rip my CDs. That doesn't mean I actually want to hear *all* of the songs on an album in random play or in Genius mixes. This way if I check only my favorites from the albums, Genius actually gives me a much better playlist without including songs I don't want or like.
