PAL : 720 x 576 @ 50Hz

NTSC : 720 x 480 @ 60Hz

HDTV : 1920 x 1080

I'd imagine that they would set the resolution of all the consoles to match whatever tv standard they're designed to run on.

A very comprehensive and accurate comparison, but what's this:

System Name: Commodore Amiga 500

U.S.A launch: April 1987

U.S.A launch Price: $799.00

Format: Disk

CPU: Motorola MC 68000

Resolution: 320 x 256/ 320 x 512

640 x 256/ 640 x 512

Colors: 16(High Res)/32(Low Res)

On Screen/ 4096 Total

Clock speed: 7.14 Mhz

RAM: 512K

Sound Processor: 4 Channel Digital

... A computer among consoles...

Aside from that, no the consoles do NOT send a signal fitted to whatever TV they're connected to. They send an image in their native resolution, then this image is treated either in the RF modulator or the TV set to conform to the correct resolution. The update frequency, however, can not be changed and that is why you must have an NTSC console to run on an NTSC television set and a PAL console to run on a PAL TV. European gamers have PAL60 and NTSC compatibility today though, so they can run NTSC consoles on their TV sets as well... :p
