+BudMan MVC Posted May 17, 2012 MVC Share Posted May 17, 2012 "Some newer network adapters automatically" Yes 10/100/1000 nics do this -- but have NEVER SEEN a 10/100 nic do it.. You stated you had 10/100 nics, did you not?? So no autocross would not work. "laptop - 10/100 Ethernet desktop - Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC" That tells me you do not support autocross - have never ever seen a 10/100 nic support autocross. Its possible that your cable is a crossover one and your modem/router needs that or is crossing it back over to normal patch. But from your statements I find it highly unlikely that your using a normal patch cable, and one of your nics are crossing it over. Do you have any numbers on the cable? What are the color orders of each end of the cable? Your solution is not a very good solution if you ask me. So your desktop and laptop and internet access cost how much?? But $40 is a lot of money for you? To much to actually allow internet access and resource sharing between your devices all at the same time? Here is a wireless router in INDIA, free shipping shows cost as Rs. 949 with FREE Shipping http://www.homeshop1...05023/cid:3302/ I show 949 = 17.4176 at the current exchange rate.. Like I said less than $20 Here is idea for you -- if you added wireless to your network, you could then charge people for access to it (may or may not be legal in your area?) Do you not have people in your area that don't have internet? Or people that come over could use internet -- charge them a few Rs.. And in no time the cost of the wireless router is covered, plus profit down the road.
SyZy
Can't make out the colours properly, but it seems to be orange-blue-green-red on each end. Also, the print on the cable reads "TYPE CM 24AWG 75C <UL> E212964 ETL VERIFIED TO EIA/TIA-568B CAT.5 PATCH CABLE A4H071" I don't understand 10/100 or NIC or anything. A solution is always best where you can work with what you've got, without buying anything else. You went to a lot of trouble in finding out how much the router costs in India. I don't think there's anyone around who needs wireless internet; most of these people have wired internet, and are probably using the same hardware that I do. There's an ISP called BSNL which is state-run, that offers the cheapest Internet.
+BudMan MVC Posted May 17, 2012 MVC Share Posted May 17, 2012 "You went to a lot of trouble in finding out how much the router costs in India." If a 2 second query for online store India, then search site for wireless routers - 3 seconds more. Then query for exchange rate India us - 2 more seconds is a lot of effort then sure - guess I went to a lot of trouble ;) Guess taking 2 minutes of your time to find a cost effective place to purchase the suggested hardware is too much time for you? If where you looked its $40. So from what your saying for the cost of less than 1000 rupee you could be the only wireless access in your area, this seems like a great idea to me. You clearly have a laptop with wireless access that you can not actually use as intended - **** you can not even connect it with a wire and access the internet at the same time as your desktop. So nobody else has wireless capable laptops or devices that they might want to connect to the internet for a few rupees? Seems to me your missing out on a actual use of your laptop, and at least bragging rights ;) in your location -- I have wireless! Which once up and running could be used to make a profit. Be it in renting wireless access to internet, or if that is not legal or against your moral code. I would think once it spreads that you have a cost effective way to add wireless you could be hired to set that up in other locations in your area or at least get asked how to do it, which you could exchange for favors or monetary gain. "A solution is always best where you can work with what you've got" That is simply not true in the slightest. So I have got a hole in my wall and some duct tape -- should I just cover it with the duct tape. Or should I get a piece of drywall and some paint to fix it? My tooth is hurting - should I go see a dentist, or **** I have a pair of pliers on hand, maybe I should just yank it out! ;) I am quite budget minded myself - a great solution to an issue is going to take into account cost for sure.. It's not like we told you to go buy a $300 top of the line wireless router with every bell and whistle possible. Not only does the wireless router provide the direct solution to your issue, it also allows for you to be able to do that 24/7 with no need to directly connect your devices. It also allows you to actually use the laptop I am sure you paid good money for in an effective way. WTF good is a laptop that either has no internet at all since your desktop is using it. Or has to be connected with a wire to a router while your desktop now has no access. What money you spent on the laptop seems wasted to me, since you can not use its full potential because you are just too cheap to spend a couple of rupees. There is frugal, and then there is CHEAP!! I have looked up cost of internet in India, again wasting so much time.. With this information being ms away, it just takes so long to lookup such info. From what I can tell even a really cheap plan is 300 rupee a month. Which really you have desktop and laptop, but your on the cheapest possible plan?? I doubt it to be honest. I am glad you got your problem worked out with a method that your ok with, but by no means was it the best solution to the problem by any stretch of the imagination.
