DrJohnSmitherson
Hey guys! I have Comcast and I am considering buying ym own modem instead of renting one. What do I need to know? I don't know about modems. I think I need a DOCSIS 3 modem. I went to newegg and saw this modem. Some people are complaining about it. Does anyone use it? http://www.newegg.co...N82E16825120004 or maybe this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122015 If I call Comcast, will they tell me if it works with their service? Jeston Veteran Posted May 18, 2012 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2012 There is a list of approved modems for Comast here. For what it's worth, I have the SB6121 on Comcast, and it is an awesome modem. I highly recommend it!
episode
Get the SB6121.
DrJohnSmitherson
The SB6121 does seem like a good choice!
+BudMan MVC Posted May 18, 2012 MVC Share Posted May 18, 2012 I have the SB6120 and have had no issues. Not really much difference with the 21, I would go with that one. And yeah payback doesn't take too long vs paying their crazy rental fees
Roger H. Veteran Posted May 18, 2012 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2012 The Linksys/Cisco one is "better" only because it's 8x4 modem (meaning 8 downstream channels) and Apparently Comcast is turning on 8 channels in lots of places: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26567418-Evidence-of-8-Downstream-Channel-Bonding-Post-Here So while I bought the 6120/21 and loved it (i think it looks great too :p) I was upgraded to the 6180 because of 8 channel bonding as well (i use Cablevision/Optimum Online in the North East) - they only use 5 channels as of now but seems they are testing 8 channels in Brooklyn as well. :) I definitely wouldn't go against the 6121 however though, i loved it and odds are you'll get great use out of it for the next few years even if Comcast does use 8 channels. You wont "need" 8 unless they roll out a 150Mbps plan or you have lots of congestion in your area on your node.
threetonesun
Hah, I was going to say that I bought mine instead of renting when I last moved, and came in here to find that not only did everyone else post that, but that everyone else bought the exact same modem. Definitely buy though, not only does it quickly become cheaper than renting, you also get to chose your modem, instead of getting whatever garbage the Comcast installer has hanging around in his truck.
