MX records problems

Recommended Posts

Hey, I have set up a small mail server on one of my home pc's. THe server works great when it comes to sending mail, but no mail message seems to come in when it comes from outside servers... I am using no-ip's free service for the DNS names and, I have configured my mail server under the main DNS so, I used my main DNS name as the MX record... here is what I mean (take note that I ave not used the actual adresses...)

Hostname: myserver.no - ip. info

MX record: myserver.no - ip. info priority=1

Is that wrong? Should I use something else as my MX record?

Thanks in advance y'all

is the ip address for myserver.no-ip.info yours?? This resolves to 80.145.154.88

I show a MX record point to the same thing;

bash-2.05a$ dig myserver.no-ip.info mx

; <<>> DiG 9.2.1 <<>> myserver.no-ip.info mx

;; global options: printcmd

;; Got answer:

;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 52558

;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:

;myserver.no-ip.info. IN MX

But nothing answers on port 25 (smtp) on that IP address. Kind of hard to get mail - if can not talk on port 25

BTW - I HIGHLY suggest you do not run a mail server on your local machine. There is NOT one good reason to do so, most likely you will not be able to email any of the major domains, since most of the major players block mail from a dynamic IP address - which I show yours being - p50919A58.dip.t-dialin.net

If you machine is not on - you could loose mail, or atleast have it delayed for quite some time, unitl the server trying to send you mail tries again, etc.. If you do not have a complete handle on how to secure it - most likely it will just end another open relay on the net.

If you do not like the email services that your ISP provides - there are many places that will provide email for your domain for very reasonable pricing.

check your firewall-- or router... you have to have port forwarding open on your router if you have one to forward port 25 to your mail server... on your firewall you have to open port 25.... and why pay when you can do it for free :)

and why pay when you can do it for free :)

For one most likely its against his AUP in the first place. Second, he has to spend time in configuration - and now everytime he reboots his box, or his connection is not working - he will be thinking he is missing mail. Which is likely true - if a server can not connect to his machine to send mail, it will attempt again in a few minutes, but it is likely that mail could get delayed. Also, since he is on a dynamic, it could change - and if an outside server had cached his last IP - it will not be able to send, and sooner or later it will bounce. Is that FREE?

There is NOT one legit reason for the home user to setup a mail server - NOT one. Its NOT FREE, and most likely within a few minutes of him getting it to work - it will be spamming your mailbox! Like I said if he is NOT happy with the email service that his ISP provides him, there are many options - running your own server should be the LAST choice. Since there are MANY places that will provide your domain with email, or even free.

Since most of the MAJOR players will not accept mail directly from his home server anyway - what exactly is the point?? Yeah he can say he runs his own mail server, that can not deliver mail to any major domain that is blocking dynamic IP's - woohoo, we are all impressed.

:woot: Lolz... :woot: guys, calm down I hate spam just as much as everyone and that is not why I wanna make my own mail server... so here is why (and btw... no, the myserver.no-ip.info is NOT mine... I thought no one had it so I used it as an exemple...) turns out the mail wasnt comming in coz I had misconfigured my port forwarding...

Top 3 reasons I wanted to get my own mail server...

1- I wanted to see how it was done

2- I'm tired of being limited to 1mb files when im not home and don't have access to a FTP server

3- My step-dad want's to set one up on his business server along with his new website so I figured id try it out and tell him how it goes.

I set it up on an old computer (pIII 600MHz with 512MB ram) and put it in a closet in the basement... it's running windows 2000 and an antivirus... that is all... so I hope it is not going to crash to often since im never going to use the computer... if I like it i'll prolly put a UPS on just in case... but power failed only for about 4hours in the last 2 years in my area and that's coz they had to cut power in order to repair somewhere else!

use mail enable is what i use on my home server ... www.mailenable.com ... it gives you many many options for free (the standard edition is free which i use) and has automatic span protection built in (it does need set up though) --- I host my own server and the only "major player" I have problems with is AOL... but aol can go f* themselves b/c they suck anyway
