Ugly icons when using a wallpaper...

Recommended Posts

Following is my reply to your original post...

Well I've got XP with a nice background and Active Desktop enabled (not really an issue since it is now the actual Desktop and not an extension), and I have no problems with my icons. And yes my wallpaper is a JPEG image, but that really doesn't matter as XP converts GIF and JPEG images to BMPs before applying them as wallpapers (or Desktop Backgrounds as they are now called).

As for locking the desktop icons, all this affects is the ability to move the desktop icons and has a ugly side-effect of making your icon text non-transparent (like any pre-XP version of Windows).

The only thing I can think of is this: does the problem occur with the normal XP icons? (i.e., My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc...) If not then the icons you are trying to change to may not have their alpha (the blended shadow) defined incorrectly.
