Mazhar
In my office computer, certain websites are not opening in my computer like microsoft.com and certain other sites. Other computers in my office can open them as usual. We have a small 4 computer network via a Switch. Whenever I try to open microsoft.com, it suddenly, without loading, says Server not found (in Firefox). I have tried chaning my DNS to openDNS but doesn't work. Nick H. Supervisor Posted May 30, 2012 Supervisor Share Posted May 30, 2012 If other computers can access the sites that you've tried and they succeeded, I would imagine that the problem is related to the computer rather than the network. When you say that it's only certain sites that don't open, does that mean that there are some sites that do open on that computer?

And today I have changed my PC but the problem still persists. So it is confirmed that the problem is not of the PC.
Mazhar
Anything in your hosts file? How can I solve it? As I said, my old office PC is gone today, I have changed to a new PC with new Windows XP installation in it. So I think the problem is with the network I am connected to, but still other computer works fine on these sites, only mine does not work.
Nick H. Supervisor Posted May 30, 2012 Supervisor Share Posted May 30, 2012 Ok, well if you've changed computers then it won't be a problem with the hosts file either. But at the same time I have to wonder why some sites open without an issue and other sites say that the server wasn't found. Have you tried connecting to the network at a different desk, with the same computer you are having problems with? EDIT: Actually, I should have said that it probably isn't a problem with the hosts file.
Mazhar
Have you tried connecting to the network at a different desk, with the same computer you are having problems with? What you mean? Nick H. Supervisor Posted May 30, 2012 Supervisor Share Posted May 30, 2012 What you mean? Through Network Places > Workgroup computers > Mazhar ?? No, I mean physically disconnect your computer from the network, find another desk and connect the computer to the network at that desk.
Mazhar
No, I mean physically disconnect your computer from the network, find another desk and connect the computer to the network at that desk. That would make a difference of network cable only. So why not I try to unplug existing network cable and pull another computer's cable on my desk? CPressland
Yeah - that'd only make a difference if it was a Smart switch tagging a different VLAN into a specific LAN port. Anyway, please browse to this folder: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and open a file called 'hosts' in Notepad and paste the output into a reply to this post. CPressland
My host file: <snipped> Why on earth do you have all of those AV Vendors blocked?! I'd be willing to bet this is part of the issue. Xahid 1 Share

CPressland
I dont know who did this, may be the person who installed the OS? So what I do now? Well - assuming that other blocks have been made elsewhere on the Filesystem with AV / Firewall stuffs. I'd be willing to guess that theres a Virus on that system specifically blocking the System from talking to Microsoft - remove it from the Network and reformat it asap! Additionally - use an Up-to-date OS like Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.04.

So right now I cant reinstall it as it is my office PC, I have important data in it. Any other way?? EDIT: I dont think this is a virus issue as this issue still existed on my old PC. UPDATE: I cleaned up the hosts file but still I cant open avg.com and symantec.com even though avg.com was not in the hosts file !

Boot into Ubuntu (download a LiveCD from ubuntu.com and burn to a CD-R), copy off anything important from your USB Stick to the filesystem - reformat the USB Stick, copy your important stuff back. Format the System. Do not use the System for anything else and don't make any network transfers else you could infect your entire network.
CPressland
EDIT: I dont think this is a virus issue as this issue still existed on my old PC. If you used this USB stick on your old PC and your new one, you simply transfered the Virus between them. This USB stick is the only thing in common. +BudMan MVC Posted May 30, 2012 MVC Share Posted May 30, 2012 Sorry but those host file entries are not normal! And I sure and the hell can not think of why a company would use host files to block AV sites? So points to an infection of some kind. So here is a test, boot from LiveCD -- do your sites your saying not work now work? If so, then something on that machines OS is the problem. Do a clean install, don't use the usb just yet - does it work now? Good, now when you use your usb to put your files back what happens? What I can tell you is that host file you posted points to an infection! How you are getting said infection is the question? As to the problem having been since you started with company is meaningless -- quite possible you have been infected since them. Also once you cleaned up the host file, did you reboot or flush your local dns cache? Just deleting the entries does not clear the current local dns cache. +BudMan MVC Posted May 30, 2012 MVC Share Posted May 30, 2012 NP -- and to be honest even if clean up your host file allows you access to some sites. I would be more concerned with how those entries got there in the first place. And most likely do a clean install just for assurance that the box was actually clean. But yeah see your point does look like I am telling you about your host entry issues ;) Those comments were directed towards the OP.
