Gmail activesync +iPhone

Recommended Posts

Folks, I have an annoying issue with Gmail.

I have my iPhone/iPad connected to gmail via active sync.

& I have google setup as a pop account on outlook 2010, my issue is - when I delete email on the ipad/iphone it doesn't get deleted properly. So when I open outlook 2010 it syncs all email, including the stuff I deleted. It all come sin to my inbox.

Anyway to prevent this from happening??? eg: mail deleted on the ipad/iphone actually gets moved from my gmail inbox and archived, like what happens when outlook 2010 pulls down the email.

I have a couple recommendations.

1. You are using POP to sync your desktop email with Gmail. Pop is an older protocol for syncing emails. Basically outlook is downloading all of your emails to your computer and saving them there. When you get a new email, that email is simply saved on your computer. When you delete or archive an email it is deleted on your computer NOT on gmail.

Solution: Gmail provides a number of ways to access your emails. The protocol that works best with outlook currently is IMAP. IMAP will sync with gmail in the sense that when you delete an email in outlook, the email will be deleted on gmail. google provides instructions to configure outlook to do this here: http://support.googl...en&answer=77689

*note: be sure to enable IMAP on your Gmail account before trying this.

2. As I write this, doing a little research, I have discovered that if you enable gmail with IMAP, selecting 'gmail' from iphone mail settings will automatically sync IMAP so you should be good to go there.

There is also a free Gmail app in the app store from google that sync's perfectly with gmail.

Pop for outlook works fine for me.

It just when you delete an email on the iphone/ipad when using active sync, it still stays in the inbox. So when I open outlook, it downloads all the emails I've already read or deleted. Something I don't want it to do.

iMap doesn't offer push email like active sync does. Plus the app isn't an option as that means I've another location to go to to check for mail/messages.

When as I use iphone/ipad for work email and like having all my account int he one place, under all inboxes.

Gmail active sync is an IMAP service with push support.

The way that gmail works I am willing to bet that pop is downloading all mail from the 'All Mail' section of gmail. If you setup outlook as IMAP it will pull folders (labels in gmail). When email is deleted from the inbox it is not deleted from all mail. It's worth a shot to try setting up IMAP on outlook.
