Antivirus Program for NEW PC Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi All

ordered a NEW AMD Quad Core A6 3620 Processor on May 31st, not arrived as yet though, but wondering on Antivirus program i should use on it, Norton Antiivrus 2012, active 3 user subscription, or Avast Home Free 7, or Microsoft Security Essentials.

Gonna have 8gbs of ram, and 1tb hard drive, and Radeon 6530D graphics--should be much better than my current system

Welcome to any suggestions on the Antivirus software side, Probably staying with Windows 7 64bit a while longer, then may upgrade to Windows 8 in the future

For a paid solution I always recommend Nod 32 as it is easy on resources and gets the job done.

The free solution is still MSE, as I'm sure many will agree.

Avast Free Edition and buy MalwareBytes (It's a lifetime license...If you use the free version it doesn't sit scanning in the background, only does manual scans). All you'll ever need. Remember to set each of them to ignore the other by adding their location and update sites to the exclusions.

I used to use NOD32 but find Avast better now, especially since it's free. As for MSE, you MUST be joking?! Sure, it's a vast improvement over their previous solutions but still falls WAY behind most other releases.

Agreed I use avast and malwarebytes too. I also don't think Mse is very good. I aways wonder why everyone thinks its an av god

Cos it's Microsoft's personal version of their Forefront server solution but it's still nowhere near as good as the competitors who have been in the AV business for years.

Why bother though? I never use a firewall now, most people are behind a router which has a NAT firewall so they don't need it. Any decent AV/AMW will stop any attack attempt.

I always recommend these to everyone. :)

Paid: ESET Antivirus or Smart Security

Free: Microsoft Security Essentials

the difference in finding viruses betwee them is minimal and you're just as likely to get a zeo day on any of them. however unlike avg and avast MSE hasn't killed computers several times with bad updates.

Your router only stops incoming traffic. Rogue programs (or anything else you don't want to) can still call home freely.

As for an Antivirus I haven't used one in a decade. All you need is common sense, and besides no one writes viruses anymore. It's all rogue programs, trojans, spyware, etc these days. I do have Malwarebytes and even it has never found anything on my system though I use it to clean crap off other people's computers and it works great. Basically just don't be dumb and you won't get infected.

Avira Antirus, according to me, the new AHeaD technology uses heuristics to detect new viruses as well.. Moreover, its completely free.

An alternative, equally efficient is NOD32.

These deductions have been brought about from my personal bachelor's research on AV products

bad research then as pretty much every av uses heurestics.
