Slow LAN speeds

Router - Linksys WRT54G2 / GS2 running DD-WRT

Trying to transfer files from one computer to another is extremely slow. Both running wireless, I only get 1Mb/s when both are connected to 54Mbps. There are no other routers nearby that could be interfering. I've disabled IPv6 on both computers as well. Both computers running Win7 Pro.

Downloading from WAN gives me 4.5Mbps (ADSL 5Mbps). I'm going to buy a NAS so I want to make sure the transfer speeds are good.

What are the wireless adapters rated? Just because the router can handle speeds up to X does not mean that the wireless adapters can! Also check for the obvious: Firewall? (even windows built in one) AV software? (Disable and see what happens) Check for updated drivers for the adapters and check for the latest firmware on the router.

One's a 802.11g the other is a 802.11n. I'm running MSE on both computers. As I said I'm running dd-wrt and there is nothing I need to update.

Wireless to Wireless? You definitely wont be getting good speeds there especially since the wireless is 1/2 duplex. Your Link rate is 54Mbps but your actual max speeds with a single client to the router is ~23Mbps. Now divide that by 2 then you are down to 11Mbps or so.

So you are only getting 1Mbps or 1MB/s - there's a diff :D

Then again that's a WRT54G running DD-WRT which uses more CPU than standard firmware as well.

My whole point is that you are probably expecting too much.

FYI - Not only routers interfere with wireless, your wireless mouse/keyboard or cell phone wifi/bluetooth, not to mention baby monitors and or your neighbors devices. Those obviously wont show up on a scan but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

I tested wireless to a NAS connected through Ethernet with a flash drive and am getting 2.78MB/s write speed.

EDIT: 3-3.25MB/s wired to the wireless computer. 3.75-4MB wired - wired NAS. (It's a crappy Ritmo LN-86BT running snakeos).

Are you transferring multiple files or a few large ones? I had the same issue as you until I figured out when I only transferred one file the speed was what it was supposed to be. It's when I tried to transfer thousands of files that the speed dropped to what you are reporting.

I plan to transfer large files to a NAS. Now that I'm looking more into this, I'm thinking I need a wireless N router and run gigabit Ethernet to the NAS and plug in the usb wireless N to my laptop.

EDIT: Would anyone recommend using an ASUS RT-N16 as a NAS? That way I could save some money instead of buying a NAS and new router.

EDIT2: Nevermind, apparently any router with NAS support can't compete with a true NAS.
