Frogboy Administrators Posted January 15, 2002 Administrators Share Posted January 15, 2002 What OS GUI's have you used and which ones do you prefer and why? Which ones look the best and which ones WORK the best? Some of my favorites include: Useful: OS/2 Warp 4 (close button on the left side of min/max). Prettiest: Aqua Looks nice but not as productive: BeOS

whack
Linux with a minamalist Enlightenment only (as in no gnome) desktop and a transparent E-Term attached to my desktop and OSD clock for my time here's a pic The E-Term goes almost al the way down the left hand side of the screen and just underneth it is my Icon box for minimized apps and of course the menus are all just clicks on the desktop :) :) :) And secondly (please don't hunt me down and kill me for this) MS Windows enivorments as I know so many keyboard shortcuts I practically never see the need to touch the mouse unless I'm working with graphics or playing a video game. Just simple and quick key combinations and all is done :)

InTrIgue
I would have to say Gnome! over all but just for windows it would have to be LiteStep.
Osiris
Yeah id agree Linux Gnome GUI was pretty good, but yeah productivity wise BeOS and Win2000 were pretty clean cut and easy to use.
sheer
Mac OS 9 is the fastest, simplest and most intuitive GUI I have used and is what I work in daily. XP after tweaking (with a decent themes and shortcuts) is not far off, I find it quite similar to OS9 in many respects.
[Fuzzy]
personally, I found this weird mix of NextSTEP / OSX that i was able to emulate with NextSTART on my PC...but that doesn't really count... Apples GUIS = too simple, not enough options out front and just...akward (for myself) MS = solid I think...but still...they (for the most part) lack that creativity that fuels other interfaces... Linux = least experience, but i've some screenshots that range from the most minimalistic, interesting GUI's to the most ridiculous overcrowding on earth.. BeOS = i <3 BeOS. My favorite GUI ever. It just all made sense to me. The coulda put the Close/Min/Max buttons all the way over on the right somehow...but damn...it was nice (i thought) OS X - different from previous Apple GUIs cause it doesn't suck. Don't get me wrong, I love my iBook. But I didn't till I got that beta of X.1 that ran so well. OSX has an elegance to it and a look that cannot be matched. However, I do also think it suffers from Apple's twist of marketing to the completely computer illiterate (ie: housemom's, lacrosse players, webdesigners j/k i am a webgeek). This creates a GUI that is really EASY to use. But it doesn't offer the power in the options to customize it. Which sucks. I use XP right now, with a truelaunchbar on the side. honestly this is the most PRODUCTIVE gui ever, but it could be prettier, like window edges could be anti-aliased...
