Do I Need Software Firewall

Recommended Posts

I am now on LAN and DSL Router(D-link) which got Builtin Firewall....And i am Using OutPost Firewall...do i need this Software Firewall....i really trust Outpost alot and Its very effective and easy to use....but i am afriad it block some stuff i need while sharing file through the LAN or with my DSL connection....

Like i cant use LAN messanger , and i dont know why...while All other Friends with me on the LAN can use it...And no one of them Use software firewall.....

so do u think its better to uninstall my firewall and depands on the Router one..to get the best of my DSL and LAN??

If you've got a router, a software firewall is only needed for monitoring outgoing connections from local apps. If you're not worried about monitoring those, then you don't need a software firewall.

Your router will save your from all that **** from now on as long as you don't forward the ports that these worms pry on.:

No, do not install the firewall software...it will just overprotect your computer, which you dont want because u cannot do much things with other programs that need certain ports

if you use dsl and are behind a router i dont think anything would be necessary. if you dont feel safe turn off your modem when not in use and then nothing can happen :)

There may be instances that you're forced to be in a DMZ. If you run into that, then yes you will need one.

My computer is always in DMZ, never had a problem :p

Why would you use a firewall? it is just something extra running you dont need that eats ram and cpu cycles :(

A true DMZ? It helps with management of network access with local apps, before the patches are released.

The problem thats i will open some ports in the Router...like Emule and Bittorrents Ports so i can download well...

so is it safe to remove the software firewall?

I am just using a router. It is a Linksys WRT54G and stealths all my ports and has NAT. According to all the tests online I have tried (GRC, etc) I am fine. If you have the same options (which you probably do as I think all routers these days support NAT) then you should be fine. Don't bother with a Software Firewall it just makes finding problems a lot harder!!

Well yeah obviously!!

but at least the firewall can actually tell you what prog/virus is trying to connect and when.

I honestly see no difference in performance either way. Better safe than sorry :)

It depends on how backed up they are, and what they have to do on your end. More then likly they will need to send a tech out to set it up (maybe not at your house, but they may still need to send one out, and you will never see them).
