MtnDewCodeRedFreak
Okay here goes. Some of you, BudMan included, might remember a post I made last year regarding the wireless networks and Windows Server operating systems. I don't want to revive that old thread up for the obvious reasons. Well, I finally came up with a way to get around that issue. First, I removed the wireless PCI card from my server and put the slot cover back, then put the wireless PCI card back in my workstation PC. Then I connected the physical network cable from my workstation to my server via the built-in ethernet jack in both my towers (the ones that's included by default via the motherboards, not the separate PCI NICs ... mainly b/c, well, I don't have any separate PCI NICs to begin with! lol). The server showed a network has formed, but I still don't have any Internet access. Hmm .... Suddenly, I remembered the Internet Connection Sharing feature that's included in Windows since 98. Oh man, how could I have forgotten that?! I thought to myself, lol. So, I enabled ICS on Windows 7, and pah it worked. I can now access the Internet on my server. I then applied the same thing with my laptop (as the host) to my Sorenson VP (video phone) - it worked also. So, basically it goes like this: Hosts - Workstation and Laptop connected wirelessly to my router downstairs (b/c the upstairs room where I'm in doesn't have a cable modem) Guests - Server and VP, respectively Tell me your opinions - is it wise or not wise to use ICS? (You know how IT people are like - always trying to find complex solutions to simple problems, lol)
+BudMan MVC Posted June 25, 2012 MVC Share Posted June 25, 2012 I don't have a clue to what your talking about. What is this old thread? As to using ICS, yeah it works - very very limited in features. Why in this day an age when you can buy router for $20 or for that matter, and if you already had something doing nat - ie your router downstairs and you need to need to change over some media or use wireless and wired off a another computer to connect to your network wireless or wired for other machines you could just bridge the interfaces. If your using ICS behind another nat router, then your at min double natting which is not the way to go about things. What is this other thread, so I can remember what your going on about ;)
MtnDewCodeRedFreak
Lol, BudMan. https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/974162-a-dumb-question/page__p__593677298__fromsearch__1#entry593677298 Found the thread.
+BudMan MVC Posted June 25, 2012 MVC Share Posted June 25, 2012 Ah the thread where you were too cheap to buy a cable because the tabs that hold it in place might break ;) "I don't want to pay for stuff that can easily break, you know?" And would rather spend $$ on a wireless card for slower/shared speeds for a server.. So again you don't need ICS, you can just bridge wireless connection you have on your workstation to the wired interface to your new "be careful with the tabs on the cable ends" connection to your server. Now there is no double NAT, and can actually serve up stuff off your server to things on the network without having to figure out and dick with port forwarding through ICS. sc302 Veteran Posted June 25, 2012 Veteran Share Posted June 25, 2012 and what happens when the usb gets broken off or the antenna gets chopped off? everything breaks or can break. get over the tab issue, they have been using those tabs for over 50 years...if it were a large issue they would have redesigned the tabs by now...just like they do with usb dongles (making them smaller so they don't break when you leave them in). for example: http://www.amazon.com/AirLink101-AWLL5088-Wireless-Ultra-Adapter/dp/B003X26PMO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1340647275&sr=8-3&keywords=wifi+adapter

LOL - well I was at college at the time! So being cheap while at college was justifiable. Hmm bridging connections? Never tried that. Hd on - lemme try.... MtnDewCodeRedFreak
Well it took several tries, but it worked. Yay. What about my laptop and VP? I don't think there's any bridging options in the VP settings though. Edit - never mind. It worked. Thanks a lot for your input. :)
