Backup / Sync software with specific requirement

Question

Hey Neowinians,

I am looking for some backup software which can be installed and configured onto some laptops in a small business.

They have a HP Microserver running ubuntu, with Samba shares.

The laptop users spend most of their time out of the office (financial advisors).

I am looking for a backup tool which can be installed onto their laptops. When they are in the office, connected to the office network via wifi or ethernet cable, the software runs, syncs their user folder, backups their Zimbra email profiles, and also takes a backup of their document folders.

Each user is in the office at least once per week.

Ultimately these users are responsible for their own data, as they are all self employed, but my client who owns the business, wants some form of backup in place for the laptops, as loss in data will cost her, as much as it costs each financial advisor

I have tested with clients laptop over VPN and the backups are too slow. The office has an ADSL connection 5Mb down / 1Mb up, and their homes etc are all pretty similar.

Zimbra profiles are ~ 200-300Mb

Their user folders are ~ 100-200Mb

And document folders ~ 50-100Mb.

Based on the above backing up over the VPN is not the best solution due to speeds and time it will take each user.

I have considered dropbox and other cloud solutions, and again do not believe they are feasible.

There is no issue with speed in the office as with have gigabit connections to each desk, and wifi aswell, and each laptop user shares 2 desks, so there are never more than 2 of them in at any one time, so backups in the office are not an issue.

So to summarise:-

I am looking for a backup/sync solution that can be set to run automatically with no user input when connected to a specific network.

Happy to look into backup scripts or software to trigger backup software to run based on the connection.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.goodsync.com/

Does pretty much "everything" - however it's commercial. Also added bonus is that it's multi-platform, I use it on Macs.

Had a very quick look at their website. Is it capable of running when a specific network connection is detected?

http://www.goodsync....ks/key-features

Automation

Start On When Folder Is Connected

GoodSync start synchronizing two folders when both of them connect. This includes:

  • Network Share appears due to connection to local network
  • Remote server appears due to connection to the Internet
  • Portable disk appears due to insertion into computer
  • Windows Mobile phone appears due to docking to desktop

It has tons of automation possibilities - you can download the free trial and try it out for yourself

Nice! Will test this one out. Price is reasonable also.

You can use Cobian to backup that, just setup a backup job (weekly or whatever) to the server and theres a setting (missed backup or whatever) that says that the program tries again to do the job every xxx hours.

That way even if the user is not at the office at 9am of mondays, the program can try to backup at whatever range of hours you define...

That will not work in this situation.

When out of the office, they are frequently connected by VPN back to the office.

I do not want the backups running over the VPN, as the internet connection is slow as it is.

Backup should only run when connected to the network locally in the office.

I am trialling goodsync as suggested by Miuku
