Cant connect using remote desktop from outside

Recommended Posts

So here is my situation right now. I am unable to connect to my computer from the outside. I tried using a remote desktop on my phone and still no luck. My ISP is Verizon and I'm not sure if I'm implementing port-forwarding properly. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or not. I'm currently using a Westell router and a wireless Netgear router for my wireless desktop home ( the device I'm trying to connect to at the moment)

You need to setup port forward on TCP Port 3389 to point to your internal host IP address. You might want to consider fixing the internal host IP address, because if you're using DHCP, it will most likely change over time.

Also make sure your internal host's firewall is open on that port.

Care to help me step by step? Like in the screen shots what do I fill in? I know 3389 is the port for remote desktop and all my attempts seem to fail. I even tried port forward on both routers and still no luck :\

3389 should be in all 3 port fields in the first screen shot.

in the second screen shot you should select the pc you want to connect to.

I would disable any and all software firewalls, including windows firewall and any av suite based firewall, for testing purposes. make sure you can connect within the network prior to trying external. leaving 3389 open isn't recommended due to it being compromised a few months back (there is a fix for now, but how long until someone finds a way around it). I would use a service like teamviewer or logmein, which are free btw, to remote into your computer(s).

if you have another router between the computer and the verizon piece that you have screen shotted above, all of this is a moot point as you are in a double nat situation which rarely, if ever, works properly.

"I'm currently using a Westell router and a wireless Netgear router for my wireless desktop home "

So you have 2 routers or 3 counting the verizon device?

Make and model number of ALL devices between your box and the internet would be helpful.. But yeah sounds like your double natted if not triple natted.

Yeah PITA to have any inbound ports open. And a real performance killer besides, and just plain wrong type of setup and just asking for issues when you double nat, let alone triple.

If you want inbound to work with multiple nat, then you have to forward the port through all the layers. So here is triple nat so you get the picture.

internet-<public IP>device A<192.168.1.1>-<192.168.1.2>device B<192.168.2.1>-<192.168.2.2>device C<192.168.3.1>-<192.168.3.100>yourbox

So for 3389 to get to your box, you need to forward on A 3389 to 192.168.1.2, on B you need to forward 3389 to 192.168.2.2, then on device C you need to forward 3389 to your box finally 192.168.3.100
