~ Rogue ~
Neowin, It's been a while since I've visited these forums but I lurk regularly. I love this community. Anyhow I am hoping some of you technical guru's out there can assist me in a dilemma. My best friend has two young girls who are now nearly middle school age. They're old enough to know about the Internet and find themselves needing it for school and whatnot. So he is going to go buy two new computers. One for each of their bedrooms so that they can do their homework, use their Facebook, and whatnot. It's the generation of today. However he wants to protect them. He has already sat down with them and discussed Internet safety and the family rules for using the Internet. His daughters understand and even accept that their computers will have parental controls in place. He does not want to hover over their online activities. He wants to protect his daughters though as any parent would. I am not looking to get into the whole ethical debate on this subject. His family had a long discussion about this and even his oldest daughter (she's 12) supported this idea (provided there is an appeal mechanism in place - lol she wants to be a lawyer). Now what I am going to ask is going to sound like big brother. It is. However his daughters have accepted that this will be in place for now. As they get older this issue will have to be readdressed we all know but for now it's appropriate. So here is what he wants to do and he's willing to spend a little money on it. There are going to be 3 computers in the home. The master computer (in the parents bedroom) and two slave computers (one in each daughters room). He wants the computers to be networked (wireless if possible) but is willing to use physical connections. He wants the ability to access his daughters computers remotely (from the PC in the bedroom) to see what they're seeing, to view files on their PC, etc. Complete remote access. Real time. He doesn't want his daughters to have this ability from their PC's. Furthermore he wants to be able to manage the Internet security aspect. Windows updates, virus definitions, parental controls, software updates, software installations, etc. He wants to manage -everything- from the PC in the bedroom however wants to keep the other two PC's working properly. Remote management. He also wants remote logging capability. Keystrokes, URL histories, instant messaging histories, etc. He wants the ability to view these items from his PC if needed. Occasionally. Maybe never. He wants the option. So how does he go about doing this? What is needed? Etc.? Neither of us are networking specialists (do we need to hire one)? Details please. And I'll be monitoring this thread and try to answer any questions you may have. Again we all know this is Big Brother and they're not trying to be hover-like parents. They want to keep options open. Their daughters have been included in all discussions related to this and are a-ok with it. Please no ethical qualms. *Quick Edit*: He also stated that he wants a printer on the home network (wireless if possible) that's in a central location (ie: family room). He's also not opposed to having some kind of central home server for file share among the family and whoever connects to the home network (ie: friend brings laptop over, uploads to central file server, all PC's can access from said server). Does this make any sense?
deep1234
I think if he use Kaspersky Pure 2.0 It will fit for his needs. Also with the addition of Open-DNS.

Can that program be managed centrally from the master terminal while effecting all the slave terminals? How does that work exactly? And open-DNS? What is that exactly? Does that mean all network traffic would go through a 3rd party cause if so that's a no go?
