deep1234
Hi guys, I am currently trying to install a custom linux gateway at home (with 2 NIC). But my current setup is (Modem -> linksys E3000 "GW" -> linksys E3000 "AP"). After the Custom gateway is ready, I will be changing the E3000 gateway to access point. For it I am asking, can I am take a network cable from new AP to the older AP to extend the internet? I am almost sure it will work but I want to make sure. Note: Note my custom gateway motherboard can support up to 2 NICs only. I tried with 3 but it didnt work. Thanks,
Ambroos
Yep, should be no problem. I have a similar setup with a modem with a 5Ghz network from my ISP, connected to an E4200 in AP mode for my 2.4Ghz network. Works flawlessly. All devices, no matter what they're connected to have no issues at all connecting to the internet or other devices on any of the networks!
+BudMan MVC Posted July 8, 2012 MVC Share Posted July 8, 2012 So what custom linux gateway are you going with? Are you just using a standard distro and turning on routing, etc.? Or are you using a specific distro, pfsense, ipcop, m0n0wall, smoothwall, etc. etc.. I would really suggest you go with one of the dedicated firewalls/routers out there vs setting it up from a standard linux distro. Going to be much easier and faster and more than likely more secure as well. Most of the distro's out there are very mature in their lifecycles and are very robust products. What MB are you using that it can only handle 2 nics? That seems odd, if you have the slots you can add as many nics as you want in pretty much any board that I have ever seen. If need be if only 2 slots, you could put in a multiple interface card. They have 2, 4, 8 port interface cards, etc. They can get pricey though ;) But to your specific question at hand - sure you can daisy chain your AP without issue. gateway - wire -- AP -- wire -- AP Just make sure your using as AP, and not natting with the old router and have its dhcp off, etc. and works no problem.
