Haakon
Is there a way I could get remote stuff for win2k? I have a friend who always has some computer difficulties, but it's hard to help him without "seeing" his computer.. Are there a remote desktop software package? Anyone know, any ideas? digistil
There is a free alternative. It's called WinVNC. Here's the link: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html
scumdogmillionaire
On MS's Windows XP download page they have the client software to use remote assistance from a non-winxp machine. so this is probably a good bet. gg

me101 Veteran Posted January 15, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 15, 2002 I personally use WinVNC, been using it for years... Have it installed on most of my friends PC's so I can help them with their computing needs, excellent, runs as a service, quick (i'm over cable and so are some of my friends so it's a whizz, but even more slower links it's excellent, there are even low bandwidth versions available if you want!) and it's easy to use. Gees even the client is like under 200k and takes less than a minute to install from a floppy. I highly recommend it.. I've used most of the rest, and always come back to VNC. I've even got EVERY PC in my company WAN using VNC, makes support and trouble shooting a breeze, heck I can even see and do maintenance on any desktop on the whole WAN from my home via our Citrix system, makes support so much easier when you can see the stupid mistakes that the users are making... MxxCon
only advante of VNC is that it's free, open source and crossplatform. otherwise it's slow, can't transfer files and generaly pretty limited. windows native terminal service is the fastest but also can't transfer files. Remote Administrator is very fast and can transfer files, but not free. pcAnywhere is nice too, but i think Remote Administrator is better. another interesting prgrm is Remotely Anywhere. it doesn't need client becuase everything is html and you can do alot of administration w/o taking over actual screen. http://www.remotelyanywhere.com they have actual demo machine you can connect to and check it out.
