dhcp server and pxe (wds) server problems

Recommended Posts

hey guys,

Here is the situation that we are having:

8 sites all on different subnets have a local dhcp and sccm wds server.

we've consolidated the dhcp scopes to one server in the region and kept the wds servers at the local sites because of networking speeds.

iphelper has been enabled and all clients from all sites are getting an ip address from the consolidated dhcp server.

problem we are having is that pxeboot isn't working.

the networking guys are saying that the pxe server has to be the same server as the dhcp.. i think thats crap and that there has to be a way to set up the routers so that even though the dhcp address is coming from the 1 dhcp server, pxe will still work with the local servers.

the way they see is that that if we consolidate one then we have to consolidate the other....

anyone have any suggestions??

any help would be greatly appreciated.

This thread seems to go over you exact scenario - I did not read all the details. But I got from my quick readover that yes it is possible to run your wds on different servers.

Which makes sense - there should be no reason why they have to be the same box. It can make the setup easier to be sure, but no it is not a requirement that dhcp and your pxeboot server be the same.

Here this might help as well

A network boot referral occurs when a client is directed to download an NBP from a different server than the one it was in communication with through DHCP. This referral may be initiated by either a Windows Deployment Services server or a DHCP server. The following topics are covered in this section:

You might want to consider a network boot referrals in the following scenarios:

To direct a client to download a NBP that is located on a different computer or network location. This may be especially helpful when using DHCP options 66 and 67, because the client is typically answered directly by the DHCP server and is redirected to the Windows Deployment Services server.
