BxBoy
or go with RedHat, it's the biggest. I personally use and stick with Gentoo.
rezza Veteran Posted October 19, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 19, 2003 SuSE, Mandrake, Redhat, all good choices. Personally out of those I'd go with SuSE (or maybe the new fedora test), but thats really just personal preference. Gentoo & Slackware are the distros I'm currently using. sethrd
For a total newbie, I say go with SuSe, Red Hat, or Mandrake if you want something easy to install, and point-and-click type work. If you want to LEARN about using *nix, then go get Gentoo, Debian, Slackware, or a BSD flavour, and you will be fine. If you decided to go BSD based, I suggest Open BSD if you have a security fetish, but Net BSD is also nice.
DsnBehind
Mandrake has everything you could ask for. Not when I tried 9.1, it didn't... :shifty:
Diffused Mind
If Mandrake came with a nice crontab that had automatic pr0n downloading, then it would be complete :D But Mandrake is good for starters. After Mandrake, sink your teeth into Debian, then finally, the mother of pains, Gentoo. But on the Mandrake site, check out the hardware list and make sure all your stuff is supported. If you have a wireless LAN card, theres a 80% chance it wont work.

LOC Veteran Posted October 20, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2003 For those who don't know, Libranet is based on Debian. It has many improvements, such as the Libranet Adminmenu, and of course updated packages etc etc. If you wanna check it out (which I highly recommend) go here

slapnuts_ox
well in my opinion it all depends what you are interested in doing as to which distro you should stick with. I personally use Fedora 0.95 right now on my desktop. On my server I run debian. edit: there is now apt-get for rpms which makes fedora look much more attractive then it would otherwise look.
