Note software, with offline desktop and iOS versions?

Question

Hi,

I'm currently using Evernote and mostly like it - it allows me to quickly/easily take notes, but the actual interface for viewing and organising them IMO leaves a lot to be desired. You're also looking at I think $45p/a for the ability to download this onto my iPhone/iPad which is maybe a little excessive.

I was wondering if there are any alternatives I haven't tried? The closest I've found so far is Springpad, it's maybe a little OTT with it's Pinterest-esque features but they're easily ignored, the main problem is the complete lack of desktop app.

I've mostly found Evernote okay, but I'm going away this weekend and wanted to store some information about where we're going (a few beaches listed alongside a picture and a post code, nice restaurants along with post code, things to see in the area etc etc) which I can do okay with Evernote (despite the somewhat clunky interface) but if I don't have internet, I won't be able to access them. This would be made infinitely worse when I go abroad and have to turn off data roaming.

I was wondering if there are any alternatives I should look into, or whether I should bite the bullet and pay the $45p/a? Thank you

I think Onenote does this? It's ?69.99 (dunno on the US store) but it's only a one off fee.

I much prefer OneNote to Evernote and Simplenot, it's by far the bast note taking software there is.

Thank you Wakers, I've just tried that (only have OneNote 2007 here though) and honestly found it to be quite overwhelming and unecessarily complex, I also can't do things with that such as forward emails to it, or view everything with a decent web interface (in fact, I can't even find a way to sync my install with my phone)

Ah does it? I haven't used 2007 for ages. I've messed around with the Office 15 version of OneNote and it's even more cloud orientated, so that may be worth looking at. You can try it for free with the release preview they have of the new office. Works on Windows 7 but not below.

Thanks Wakers, unfortunately I'm still rocking Windows XP here at work, and couldn't upgrade my version of Office anyway :(

There's a free version of One note on Hotmail/Skydrive which works inside the web browser.

If you don't mind using basic text files, byword is quite good and you can simply sync with dropbox and use whatever desktop text editor which you please.

Another good option for note taking on desktop and mobile is https://workflowy.com/ but it unfortunately has no way to keep your info online aside from downloading the whole thing every time you make a change.

They are however coming up with an update for their pro version soon which includes offline editing.
