Looking for a Wireless Router

Recommended Posts

Looking for a wireless router that has these attributes, wondering if anyone knows of one:

8x Gigabit Ports

1x WAN Port

Dual Band (simultaneous) Wireless N.

DD-WRT/Tomato (or variant) compatible.

Before anyone asks, I don't want a 4 Port Router and an 8 Port Switch as I want to reduce the number of power sockets I am using.

Thanks

Money not an object. Meeting requirements is important.

Any suggestions for specific models?

You won't find all of that integrated, especially not if you want it to run DD-WRT or Tomato.

There is the NetGear FVS318N, but it performs really bad. It can't handle WAN-to-LAN speeds over 60Mbps and the wireless on it is quite crappy. But it's the only thing I can find.

Enterprise-oriented Cisco stuff never has a Wireless AP integrated simply because that is a typical consumer-only feature.

The only solution here is just going with a regular Wireless AP and getting a seperate 8-port switch. There is nothing wrong with doing it that way.

But why would you want 8 ports in the same spot anyway ?

it seems unlikely you have 8 computers/network devices in the same spot. so it would make sense to have two "hubs" so to speak that you can spread out from. like under my TV I have, Xbox,BluRay/receiver and HTPC. that's 3 network connections, making it more sensible for me to put a small switch there to distribute connections from one cable. especially if in the future I upgrade my satellite receiver to a HD-PVR as that will also have network, and maybe I'll upgrade my TV to one with network built in. then I'm up to 5 devices in this location.

And I have my main computer area upstairs, so I have another router up there. to give signals to the 2-4 computers, and wirelessly to a printer and another xbox. For now the two routers are also bridged over the 5Ghz band. since that is the one least devices can use. and it also gives me excellent 2.4 coverage both upstairs and downstairs.

As was said, there is nothing that fits your criteria because you are looking at 2 different segments at the same time. 8 port routers with dual-band WIFI that supports Tomato/DD-WRT simply don't exist. You will have to get something more enterprise but then that comes with it's own Cisco iOS and DD-WRT can't/wont support those devices.

So, just because you don't have a requirement, then I don't?

My AV unit has (network connected devices):

1) TV

2) AV Receiver

3) PS3

4) Net-top HTPC

5) Sonos

6) Blu-Ray Player

7) Sky+ HD Box

8) A connection out to the rest of the house

The point where the internet connects is also behind the AV Unit. So yes, I do have a strict requirement for 8 ports, possibly more in the future. I already have a modem, router (with 3 usable ports) and a switch (providing 4 more usable ports), but to be honest it's horrible with the number of plug sockets all this kit is taking and I want to consolidate down as far as I can.

As said above it's really hard to find what you're looking for or in other words it's impossible. I could suggest you FortiWiFi a 6 port wireless router but the problem is that it is not DD-WRT nor Tomato compatible and with this you won't be needing them anyway. You'll fall in love with it once you use it. We own like 50+ of them and they're absolutely great. :)

Good luck!

If your stuck with internet connection being where its at, but your looking to reduce number of devices in the location. Why don't you just put in a managed/smart switch in the location. Then with vlans move you edge router (nat) and wireless to some other location.

You could put in a 16 port managed/smart switch at the AV/dmark of your internet connection. Then downstream somewhere you could have your actual nat router. And then put AccessPoint(s) where you need them in the house. If you need one in the AV location, if your switch you put in at the AV location was POE, you wouldn't have to use up a elec connection for your AP there.

There is nothing saying your edge/border router hat to be at the dmark. Even if you don't want to do it via vlans, you could always just run a cable from the dmark to some other location in the house to your router, then connect into your lan at that point vs in the AV location. Sure it can be a pain moving the cable connection to another location, but once your modem changes it to ethernet - this is pretty easy to run.

You stated you already have connection running elsewhere in your house. Can you not run another cable along that path?

As stated your going to have a hard time finding a G/N dual band wireless router with 8+ gig ports. But why does your router have to be located in your AV location just because that is where your isp connection is? And why does wireless have to be there as well? If need be you could run multiple APs - some 2.4, some 5, some G, Some N, etc.

as being shown them recently, I have to recommend a Buffalo Router, they're spec'd great for their price and can run dd-wrt

and yeah, as others have said above, you're not going to be able to find an 8 port residential grade router, you're going to HAVE to buy a switch if you want more ports

edit: i did manage to find an 8 port wireless N router but the ports aren't gigabit and I wouldn't be surprised if tomato and dd-wrt don't support it http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DIR-632-Wireless-N-8-Port-Router/dp/B003XMAD22
