vmware player or virtualbox?

Question

Windows 7 will be the Host O.S. Basically, I want to create/run an OpenSUSE Linux virtual machine. I require that the gfx be accelerated and that I can make a snapshot of the fresh install since I anticipate breaking it often while experimenting.

vmware DOESN'T do hardware acceleration for linux guests for whatever reason

you'll want virtualbox if you want hardware acceleration

Both can do it, but I believe VirtualBox has more options.

no, VMware doesn't support hardware acceleration for linux guests, you can enable it in the vm settings but it doesn't do anything

I just installed VBOX. Its runniing but OpenSUSE 12.2 is pretty buggy so far. I have to install VBOX additions to get 3d working so we'll see how that goes.

I prefer vbox, however one thing to note.. check for distro specific addons for better preformance. With Arch unless I use the repo virtual-box additions, the acceleration and preformance drops.

LOL, OpenSUSE installed VBox additions by default with no user interaction required. Thats a good thing, except that it still runs like crap. GUI is glitchy and a bit of lag. I'm running 12.2RC2 so it's not final but it ran smooth as butter natively installed on lesser hardware. Hopefully things will improve with the final and the next version of VBox.
