corrald
I use a shared T1 in my apartment complex for internet access. I usually get about 300 to 400 kb/sec but I'd like a lot more. At night when everyone is using it, I get much less. Is there a way to gain more bandwidth? I've tried all of the registry settings to my machine, but it doesn't seem to help. Are there any programs that will allow that?
JimM17
a T1 is limited to 1.54Mbs/sec which equals approx 192KB/sec. It is not possible to get 300-400kb/sec. I hope you mean kilobits/sec and not kilobytes/sec.
M$ Agent #2
You could hack there boxes and change their registry settings so they only download like 5K a second heheheheh
corrald
Yes, I mean kilobits a second. :)
corrald
I'm kinda new at this, so you have me confused. how do you get 192KB from 1.5Mbps??
Ironman273
It's the difference between bytes and bits. Mega bits vs. Kilo bytes
KC
There probably a router some where (I think its a router that does this, could be a hub or switch i don't remember which one so just call it a nod) that splits the bandwidth as needed, and the only way to change it would be to have access to that system. +Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 21, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 21, 2003 Corrald: So you wish to gain more than your fair share of bandwidth at the cost of your neighbours? Does that not represent exactly what is wrong with society?
JimM17
I'm kinda new at this, so you have me confused. how do you get 192KB from 1.5Mbps?? 1.54 megabits = 1540 kilobits. 1 byte = 8 bits. Therefore 1540 kilobits (divided by 8) = 192 kilobytes.
loc[a]lhost
1.54 megabits = 1540 kilobits. 1 byte = 8 bits. Therefore 1540 kilobits (divided by 8) = 192 kilobytes. actually its 1536 AFAIK, but who cares lol :p anyway i dont think its legal to do what you want, and your neighbors may complain that the internet is slower that it was, and then the company that offers the service will check it and you've got f*cked :alien: if you still want to do it you must access the device that limits the bandwidth. if its a router, theres probably a way to do this in its configuration. RaisinCain
They're capping everyones download speed. A T1 is a constant speed connection- you can put a hell of a lot of people on a T1! There is probably a server & a switch somewhere in the building<<<<<<<

Do you have any idea what the hell a T1 even is, or did you just hear it was good and believe it? A T1 is 1.544mbps no faster than basic Cable or Basic DSL, the only difference is as with DSL the connection has guaranteed speed and like fibre lines, it's always on a nd reliable. In addition it gets better ping times than normal boadband. A T1 can only get 192kB/sec which is terrible for an apartment building because with just 19 people using it, you'll only get 10kB/sec each. To answer, you can't up the speed. My suggestion is to get your own seperate connection from Cable or DSL.
