LRoling
Alright, the situation is that I have Insight Communications Cable Service, I was using a COM21 cable modem for the longest time, no real problems, until I wanted to play Steam and CS, and then with the new 1.5 update, I read somewhere that it made certain modems just flat out shutdown. So, this ended up happening. I got the cable company to come swap my modem to an Arris Touchstone modem, and Steam and CS worked. About a week or two later, a really annoying thing began to happen. I get the "Network Cable Unplugged" message in my system tray, it flashes up for about a split second, and then my cable connection goes out, and comes back on immediately. I've had Insight come out 3 times, replace my splitter, lines, splitter in the living room, the whole deal, not really sure what the deal is. It is still doing the same damn thing. I have to unplug the power, plug it back in, for the damn thing to work for another 5 mins before it does it again, it's terribly annoying. If you have any ideas, please send them my way. They told me it could be the line in the wall going bad, but that seems improbable, how the hell can it all of the sudden just go to **** like that. They said I should buy a router, and hook it all up out in the living room, and then run it to my PC, and if it does it then, it's the lines in the apartment, and I should just move. What the hell! There is no way.
DreamweaverN
A router would be a good thing to get. They are right, if it's still doing it then there is not much you could do. But it sounds more like your computer is disconnecting. Again you should get a router, that would fix it. But how are you connected?
LRoling
Well, the problem they are thinking is something is shorting out the wiring from the splitter through the line to my wall jack, so it could be just a matter of setting up a wireless router on a different wall jack that may not have a line shorting out. The thing is, the lights on the modem, the cable light also goes out, meaning the cable connection is severed at some point, causing the computer to say the network cable is unplugged due to no data, but my question is can the cable modem be faulty and cause this? DreamweaverN
Yep, I think it's your modem to. As it started when you got the new modem it sounds like your best bet.
mtrftw
is the modem connected via usb?
oo420oo
usb or ethernet? Check all connections, make sure the coax cable is screwed in tightly. Get the latest drivers for your ethernet card. One way to tell if its your system or the cable modems fault is to check the lights on the modem. If the power and cable light are solid on (not flashing), your modem is online. In this case, check your network settings. Standard procedure to get your modem back online: 1. power down pc 2. unplug modem (and router if applicable) 3. wait 30 seconds 4. plug in modem, wait for solid lights on power and cable 5. (turn on router if applicable) 6. turn on pc Hope this helps oo420oo Comcast Corp Whitemarsh, MD
LRoling
Well, what happens is that the cable modem suddenly goes completely out, all lights go out, then it comes back on instantly and starts working about 10 secs after the outage, the network cable unplugged message flashes for like a second, then I'm back in business. And this is Ethernet.
oo420oo
Intermittent connection. A field tech's headache. Did you have these problems with your old modem?
LRoling
My old modem, a COM21 one, did not have this problem, only when I opened up Valve Steam for CS, and I read on their website that the program does that.
