***warning several spelling mistakes****

***and little to no grammer usage***

so this is wut happened: i come home today and see im offline, so im like hmm the service is down... so i decided to watch a movie i had downloaded. well when it was done i saw i was still offline!!! so i call cox tech support, the dude checks out my account then hes like hmmm... oh, do u have a pen... dial this number and give them this reference number...

so i know somethings goin on and i call that number, and its level 2 techsupport! /like they couldnt transfer me!?! so anyways the guy checks it out and hes all like oh ur service was disconnected because u downloaded some movies, we were only able to identify one which was american wedding downloaded bit-torrent and we ask that u delete it immediately. so i tell him i just did :shifty:

then he told me that the mpaa /mainly universal, is goin around seeing who is pirating and caught my ip off the client and gave my isp the notice to disconnect. and he told me if i do it enough times i will be permanently banned from using the cox network!!! so he got it reconnected im on online! YAY :woot:

im like omg! those a-holes!!! but o'well, looks like the days of pirating are almost over  i know i deserve it from ripping off all the peeps who work hard on the movies so i will say i will never get cought doing it again

Yeah my ISP does the same thing, never happened to me, but had a few friends get tapped. Usually its the ISP cracking down on bandwidth leechers.

This is really stupid on the side of ISPs. The only reason that these Cable and DSL ISPs exist is because of the ability to download Pirated Software, Movies and Music. Without that we would all still be on 56k. I honestly cannot think of a reason to have a 3mbit DSL line if you're not getting Warez or Movies.

That's great, and you probably think you speak for everyone when you say this...

There are small offices which use high speed lines other than T1. There's also "legal file-sharing". I don't blame you for saying this, the internet is a pirate's playground.

And you are right about one thing, high speed providers DO know a large amount of their customers ARE pirating online,

And they do want them to continue pirating as long as you'll keep their service while you do it ;)

But put yourself in their shoes, if a company was threatening to sue you for a customer's action, and they gave you an option to simply contact the customer and tell him to do this and that, Would you rather court action be taken?

There is no company that is currently doing that, nor would they have the ability to do that with large media files such as DVD rips. My guess is that the ISP is cracking down on high bandwidth users and made up some bogus reason for suspending the account.

The only way an outside source could have known that he was downloading a DVD rip is if they had actually shared him the entire files, as if with the RIAA and mp3's currently. However mp3's are about 5mb max, while a decent DVD rip can reach 1.5GB. The only real way to find out what has downloaded would be to check the ISPs cache server, which is something only the ISP can do.

The only reason I posted that is because the ISP is targeting these high bandwidth users, not because it's illegal but only because it costs them money.

thats why I love my T-3 phone company dont care how much band usuage you use as long as they get their money every month. in a few years when rates come way down for t lines ( due to fiber optics thru your electric wires) that will be the way to go.
