VWW
Hi guys, i have to set up a DHCP server that works for about 100 computers. I was wondering if there was any software around that does this? I've had an extensive look around the net and can't find anything. I really cant afford to buy windows server 2003, so i have to stick with winxp. Any help would be much appreciated :)
Keitero-sama
Hmm.. i would think IIS or something like that would offer support, but I am too lazy to install that (and I hate IIS a bit too) >_<. But you could always try a hardware router like a Linksys. Those are only 70 dollars or so. Also, they have built-in DHCP and all the other good stuff. ^_^
JimM17
whats wrong with 2k server or even nt4 server? all these server os's have built in dhcp servers. Attempting to run a dhcp server on a workstation os really isnt a good idea.
+BudMan MVC Posted October 22, 2003 MVC Share Posted October 22, 2003 got an old box laying around?? Put linux on it - FREE dhcp server. Every major distro I have ever looked at - could be a dhcp server. Could also be a wins server, etc..

Intelligen
Try another sharing software, they usually have dhcp built on. Try www.deerfield.com where you can get wingate. Or hmm: WinGate (link) - free for 2 users! NAT32 ( link) NetGuard-5 ( link) Surf Doubler (link) WinProxy ( link) MidPoint Review Both a NAT and Proxy solution SolidShare (link) ProxyPlus link Maybe they have a built i DHCP server
CubanPete
i agree with BudMan, if you dont/cant afford any or microsofts servers, NT4, 2k or 2003 just get a spare pc and install any free version of linix on it, it doesnt even need to be a that powerful, you could easily get away with uding a 266 or something. Theres no down sides to it as its just as good as any other DHCP, It may sound like im pushing for windows but honestly linux does the same job. If you've never used linux talk to some of the guys on the forum, theres always someone who knows what there doing. If your looking for a decent linux version id say redhat was my fav, but suse is really easy to use if your just starting out and mandrake is good too. all of these have dhcp and there free. Btw does anyone know what Keitero-sama is on about  ???

VWW
Thanks for all the replies! Unfortunately linux is not an option as the box is not going to be only a dhcp server. Its also being used as a workstation. JimM17 - thanks for that link, i'm looking at it now :)
