Dane
So my financee had to reset my wirless router. After doing this, her Laptop had an error saying a computer had the same IP address. And cannot use the internet. How can I fix this? Everything in her settings is set for it to automatically do this.

Everything in her settings is set for it to automatically do this. Either restart the computer or open a command prompt as admin Then type ipconfig /release then press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and press enter. See if that helps. Brandon H 1 Share

Any ideas what to do that if that does not work?

Any ideas what to do that if that does not work? If that doesn't work then go into the network adapter and set the IP as static and enter an IP address by hand preferably using a different IP than the computer has now. Let me know if you need help doing that.

Dot Matrix
Yeah, an IP release/renew should work.

+Warwagon MVC Posted August 22, 2012 MVC Share Posted August 22, 2012 Thanks. I have a desktop connected to the wireless as well, and an xbox, directv box, and two iphones. will i have to find the IP addresses out for each? You could, but I always aim high for instance if you currently IP is 192.168.1.15 I use 192.168.168.1.115 Odds are none of your devices are using an ip that high. If you still want to find the IP's of your other devices and assuming they don't have static ip's, then just go into the router and look at the DHCP table. It should tell you the ip for each device connected to the router.

It should tell you the ip for each device connected to the router. some routers start the DHCP IPs at 100, to avoid the obvious. if the computer is set to automatically get an IP and you still get that message, SOME other device in the network is set to a FIXED IP number and that should change. are you SURE you are getting a proper IP, none of those link-local ones? edit: if this is a result of resetting the router, sounds odd, but you could try turning off the suspicious devices. my bets are on the directv thing or the desktop
Dane
So I gave her computer a different IP address and it says connected, however the icon has a "!" in it for wireless. and it says no internet access. Wtf. I turned on ALL of my devices, logged into my router and took note of all the IP addresses and assigned it one of its own. Her error pops up and says DHCP is not enabled for the connection. I clicked "Fix" it says "Fixed" but still doesn't work.

Usually the IP of the primary DNS server is the same as the routers default gateway. other wise you can try openDNS Primary 208.67.222.222 Secondary 208.67.220.
Detection
?? Make sure DHCP is running in the router and make sure all clients are set to Automatic IP for each of their network adapters

Dane
A system restore on her PC back to a few hours ago corrected the issue. And it's still using the OLD IP address.
Sranshaft
Have you checked to make sure the router isn't set up to assign static IPs according to MAC address?
