Searching throw the internet I managed to find a free open source software called asterisk that is a free pbx, but I dont know what to do afterwords.

I am totally open to any suggestion or idea that can provide me what I am looking for. That is if my idea require to have a spare machine and/or buying sometypes of physical phones or etc.

Note: I have no intrest yet to connect the LAN phone network to the landline, but I would like to know my options to do it.

Thanks,

You could set up a VoIP server using Asterisk. I've never done it myself, but that's generally where you'll want to start. I think you would need to connect it to your landline if you're looking to do phone calls to phones in/out of the house?

Alternatively, if the computers are connected to the internet it would be much easier to just have Google Talk/Skype/whatever running on all the machines, then you can "call" the other computers. With headset/mic setups you'd be pretty much using them as phone service.

The paid version Skype can also call regular phone numbers.

Depends on your needs. You can get a VoIP provider or setup a SIP PBX depending on your needs. With a home setup I would recommend you get a provider and an IP phone.

Depen if you want the learning experience of Astrisk to host it yourself or installnSkype/Buy Wireless Skype handsets and have an easy solution using your internet connection which hosts remotely.

Also many DECT handset kits allow intra-handset calls at no cost, also freeing upmyour LAN traffic
