How long do you keep gadget/tech boxes?

Recommended Posts

I just did a clean-up at my house and threw out a whole bunch of boxes for devices I don't even have anymore. I was just wondering how long folks here keep their boxes, if at all, and if you repurpose them for other uses.

Depends on the item.. if it wasn't something cheap then usually a few weeks just to make sure it's good and not to be RMA'd. Consumer electronics I tend to hold boxes for a while as I typically sell them off again down the road when something newer and shinier comes along. Components and such usually only for that first couple weeks.

I must admit I horde them. Many hold tax returns and such. Some even hold the broken or obsolete items that came in them years later. My storage is a mess of ancient obsolete/broken items that I keep telling myself that one day I will use/fix again some day.

I keep a few things around. For instance I have my Xbox 360, Kinect, and Playstation 3 boxes around. It comes in handy for the times when I'm going to visit a friend. I can just repack everything securely into those boxes since I know everything has a place in them that it will fit into. :)

I don't know if this is true but some people argue resale value of items can be slightly increased if you have the original boxes. There is something about selling an item to a person in the box it came in which makes people more likely to part with a little bit extra cash.

As far as repurposing goes: I just keep a large, rectangular box to keep all of my cables in. I have too many freakin' cables.

That can sometimes be true, but only because it shows the person that you're careful with your items (or so some believe). I do know that for collectibles the box thing has more to do with it still being sealed/unopened.

about 4 seconds after the box gets opened. Boom, recycle or trash. Seriously, what would you ever need the box again for?

In case you need to return the product. Then it's ideal to keep the original packaging.

If it's out of warranty however, I personally keep them for another year or so if I intent to sell the product.

To further add to my comment, I always keep email confirmations of any order, and physical receipts you get I keep as well. But some of the things I have bought have said on the box "5 year guarantee" so I keep those boxes.

But some of the smaller boxes I do keep but solely to use as organisers for drawers, just nice looking ones though, i'm so anal haha

It's useful if you choose to return the product. It doesn't really matter if the product is faulty (a faulty product is returnable by law, regardless of packaging), but if you want to return it because you dislike it and it's fully functional, the retailer will never accept it back without the original packaging.

That's true, just check on ebay. I keep all of my boxes for video games, consoles, etc. I'm a collector so I like to keep them.
