Error scenario: Installing 9.2 and being told unable to install the base system and subsequent reboot reveals that CD-ROM is physically dead.

Why: According to LG Electronics, their ODD (Optical Disc Drive) products do not support Linux nor do they test with Linux. Unfortunately, many Dell computers (possibly others) come with these CD-ROM drives.

Solution: Currently there is no solution or work-around for this issue; it is still under investigation. Damage occurs even when doing a network install. At this point, please do not install Mandrake Linux 9.2 on any computer containing a LG-based CD-ROM or it will damage your CD-ROM! We are actively looking for a solution to this problem.

I'm just wondering to myself ... how is this possible

How can a Linux CD destroy the drive itself :o

it physically damages the drive???

The documentation says the CDROM is physically dead :o

Doesn't it?

The Mandrake install is doing something really out-of-the-ordinary, seeing as even a network install kills the LG CDROM drives.

Well I won't be using Mandrake 9.2 (even if I wanted to :shifty: )

well, they said CDROM, does that mean CDRW and dvd drives too? i guess not...how many people still use standard cdroms?

I do.

But you do have a point - either they aren't affected or they aren't being very specific

And what kernel version is that? 2.4, I suspect.

I believe that 2.6 is due soon.

The latest beta version of the Linux kernel is: 2.6.0-test8 2003-10-17 22:44 UTC F V C

The latest snapshot for the beta Linux kernel tree is: 2.6.0-test8-bk4 2003-10-24 11:35 UTC V

no way. not unless it flashes the drives bios or causes the motherboard to raise the voltage to the drive. maybe they are confusing it with just messing up the drivers and causing the drive not to work under linux.

bangbang023, **** off. learn to use ignore feature

why don't you stop chasing me around the forum and posting retarded comments.

SO WHAT THAT IT'S PHYSICALY DEAD.

99.99% of all cd drives work perfectly fine with linux.

yet comes one cd drive that died all of a sudden and it's linux's fault.

right

It's partially Linux's fault I guess :D

So far I can conclude that Gentoo and Mandrake killed the LG drives, but not the other distros. (or Windows or whatever)

Anyways ... this is too weird :ninja:

no. it seriously will cause damage, the MDK forums are going crazy. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT INSTALL IT IF U HAVE A LG CDROM.

MDK has no explanation of why this is happening...so just wait till there is a solution.

btw: LG CDroms are said to NOT be supported AT ALL by linux.

helps to do ur homewerk.
