Hook-Ups
I want to format my HD and install Windows 2000 back. Right now i have windows XP. For some reason i don't no why but XP seems to run really slowly and my computer is really fast and shouldn't have a problem. My friend told me that if i want more speed i should revert back to Windows 2000. What do you guys think i should do. Is Windows 2000 really more faster and better than Windows XP? Help me out please... but i am pretty sure it's not my sys slowing it down... Specs: Intel Pentium 4 1600 640mb's of RDRAM ATI 8500 64mb DDRAM 18.1 Inch FPD
PM5K
It's issues between your computer and your operating system, neither the computer or Windows XP is slow. It's the combination of the two. It's also an issue that I am sure can be resolved with the right troubleshooting. You should give us more specs and tell us what seems to be slow about it, maybe we can help. Just as refrence my system has roughly 1/4 the power yours does, and I don't see any noticeable diffrence between Windows 2000 and XP.
maverick319
I had exactly the opposite result when reverting back to W2K. XP seemed MUCH faster to me, but I saw one too many BSOD's in XP so I went back. Asus A7V Athlon 1.2ghz T'Bird 512mb PC133 GeForce 2 Pro I installed the Via 4in1's (1.37a I believe) and all HELL broke loose. I can only say, if your MoBo has a Via chipset, then stick with the Via driver that installs with XP. I wouldn't recommend any 4in1's at all for XP. But I will give up a little speed and purty icons for stability anyday.
Hook-Ups
Well, the thing is i use 3DS Max and other graphical programs. It's like when i just installed XP Pro it was so fast, i mean everthing started up really fast and i had no problem. Then after a few weeks my computer got slower, i even upgraded my ram like 2 days ago from 256 to 640 and i didn't even see any diff in performance... My school had P3 and running windows 2000, they have a bunch of crap installed any there computer seems really fast and fast booting any everthing. My other problem is the i have 2 HD's a 20 and a 40. I have the 20 with only the OS on it and use the other 40 to install all programs and games. The thing is my 20 gig i dropped it once and since then it has never been the same. Sometimes when i am in the middle of doing something, my computer's 20 gig HD just turns off and starts back up again. When it does that my computer freezes for a sec but when it starts back up it's ok..and it makes a weird noise..so what i wanted to do it just take the 20 gig out and just have the 40 gig at my master and install everything there, and have windows 2000 rather than XP Pro! PM5K
Well if you know the drive is damaged take it out. It's possible if the two drives are 7200 rpm and within a few inches (3 or so) that the drive is getting too hot, it's usually the drive on the top. It's also possible you have a bad power connector. Or the drive could just be broken from the fall. Anyhow, if the system got slow over time it might need a cleaning. Things like deleting temp files, logs, bak files, internet cache, etc. Remove any apps you realized you didn't want or don't need anymore, then when it's all clean run an app to clean out the registry. Finally defragment the disk.

The accelerator makes a world of difference in XP with a Pentium 4(I know this because I have a Pentium 4 myself).

If you are using Windows 9x/2000 you will probably want to install the Intel Inf Utility(chipset software) first if you are using an I8xx chipset. PM5K
Hook-Ups I don't know why you wasted our time, I should have know you were an idiot when you said you dropped a 20gb drive, you only confirmed my thoughts when you installed Windows ME. You obviously weren't considering anything we said, so next time don't waste our time by asking.

Zombie9920
Stupid question, but did you install the latest leaked Radeon 8500 drivers for XP when you were using XP? I hear they really improve the R8500's gaming performance in XP.
