Justin03248
Hey, I was just watching the three Back to the future movies since they were recenly released on DVD and I've got a question for you all who know these movies. If Marty comes back to get the doc at the end of part 2/beginning of 3 and takes him home after he passed out, doesn't that mean that he leaves behind the letter he ripped up earlier that saves him from being shot. That would mean the doc would be shot again, so then he never could have gone back to 2015 and back to 1955 because he was shot. But since Marty stopped him from getting the letter, Marty could never exist to stop the doc from getting the lettter in the first place, so it would in theory create a major paradox and destroy the universe. Am i right? Justin
forster
Kindof... Depends on the way that you view time. Its best to think of one thing happening after another, since there was never originally meant to be a trilogy. But you are right, I'd never thought of it that way. dougkinzinger
We must assume that Doc or Marty had the letter in their pockets--probably Doc since he ripped it up. There's a site that has the entire timeline and could probably answer better than me.
forster
he leaves behind the letter he ripped up earlier that saves him from being shot. He could have gone back to get it, considering that the doc in 1955 stays where he is - cant remember whether he trashes the letter or just leaves it on the street, but I'd have gone back for it. Justin03248
The way it was set up, with Doc refocused on sending marty back to 1885, the chance that he would have remembered about the letter at all and gone back to get the letter a day or 2 later is very slim. Heck, the chance that all those little peices are still there 2 days later is slim too. The only chance would be if Marty had brought the letter back to his house, but he showed no thought of doing so at the end of part 2. Even then, he never told the doc about it, so the doc would still have to remember it at all.
zackotronic
if you watch, after doc rips up the letter he puts his hand in his pocket, thus pocketing the letter.
Razorwing
maybe Doc just ripped the envelope.. NOT the letter..
