Help - Diesel engine oil in petrol car

Recommended Posts

Hey guys...

From what i have read, i dont need to be too concerned, but i have a 2002 Corsa 1.2l petrol, and accidentally put about a liter of Diesel engine oil in. Same grade - 10w40 oil....

Should i be more concerned???? I do fairly short trips to work and home, around 14 miles a day round trip.. the pregnant tortoise has 93,000 on the clock... engine sounds fine, no smoke or anything... but i have only done about 7 miles so far......

Thoughts and comments appreciated..!

Cheers for that... according to the owners manual, i can use 5w or 10w .... didnt pay enough attention when spending ?35 on darn oil... and only noticed once i put the oil away, that it was for a diesel engine!

should be fine, you used to use diesel oil in old cars to flush the engine and give it a clean but only for 500 mile max

I would drain it and refill with normal oil if i were you

what worried me is that you did not drain it immediately after realising what you had done if you were not sure if it would damage your engine

i would rather spend ?30 on oil than a new engine

You should never mix different grades of oil! Especially do not mix oil meant for diesel car into petrol engines and vice-versa unless the oil specifications allows it. You should do the only good thing one can do in this situation: Perform a complete oil change ASAP.

Thanks...! I only realised the oil was for diesel engines this morning, about 2 minutes before leaving for work... agreed... would not want to end up paying for a new engine! but could not get out of getting to work! dont have the tools etc required to drain the oil, but am askin around work to see if anyone can help out!

..... with everything else that went pear shaped this weekend... this is the cherry on top!

Was completely accidental.. It had 10w40 in it already, of course for petrol... which i bought for the last service.. and i put 10w40 diesel oil in...!

If you has 10W40 in already and you put in 10W40 in again I think you're fine as long as the grades are the same. Before you go do something like drain it all it's probably a good idea to give your local garage a quick bell and get a professional opinion.

Diesel oil usually just has low ash properties for diesel engines, it's not going to be a big deal.

However, I would recommend draining and re-filling it with the correct oil for your car's specification. You should check the manufacturer of the oil for the correct type, don't just check the grade. There are many different 10w40s, and I assure you, they are not all the same.

Well, booked the car in for an oil change on wednesday! luckily its around the corner - literally from where i work, and am not in the office tomorrow... so the car will probably only have done about 30 miles total with the diesel oil...

^^^ this

you get fully synthetic

Semi Synthetic aswell

and Diesel oils have detergents in them which i dont think Petrol oils do, or not to the same level anyway

Little story. Before I was about to drive a 400 mile round trip, I checked the oil levels in my 2008 1.7 TDI Astra, they were low but we had no oil in. Because I didn't have time to go to Halfords or whatever, look up the type I need etc, I went to a garage on my way there. He said that for Vauxhalls, you should actually put in a specialised type of oil and had to ring up someone to check it.

He wasn't trying to rip me off either, he's a good lad and only charged me the ?4 in change I had from my pocket, filling it right back up from almost at the MIN level. Apparently a bottle of the stuff is quite costly, but it's better to have the right oil for a car.

So yeah, best to check than just do it.
