Chipping PS2

Recommended Posts

I am after a PS2 as a xmas present to my self, i would like it chipped so i can backup etc..

I know ps2's are only ?140 now and this makes me even more tempted to go and buy one NOW!

But should i chip it my self or get a pre chipped one ? i mean is it hard, i have done some basic electronics as a little hobbie (sad) but will i be able to do it or will i bugger up the PS2?

also if i am to get a chip/ chipped PS2 what is a very cheap place. I have seen chipped PS2's for ?250, far to much !

Anyone got ay ideas ?

also

is there a way to put a HDD to a PS2 or link it to my pc for playing mp3's etc.

or does it have to be just the PS2 standalone ?

you could get a slide card and a swap magic disk, instead of buying and installing a mod chip.

another site with mod chips

http://www.mod-chip.com/

http://www.modchipstore.com/

here is a ps2 for sale that already has a mod chip in it.

These people sell a flip to shell for your ps2, so you would not need a slide card, just a swap magic disk.

here is another pre modded ps2 for sale

Installing a mod chip into your ps2 can be hard, also putting the ps2 back together can be hard too. I hope some of these sites helped you out.

I just got one thing to ask...

My PS2 had been chipped and for next year I plan to buy network adaptor so I can play online. I think it might not work if I have chipped the PS2 because the network adapter might detect whether I have the modded version of PS2.

That happens to XBOX as I heard the XBOX Live won't work on chipped XBOX.

Anyone would like to explain?

I doubt it will be. XBox Live is ran by microsoft and hence they have the ability to block out whoever they want. PS2 is more developer orientated when it comes to internet play.

My PS2 is modded also, and yes, if you buy a network adapter you can still play online. The catch is that you have to have an original game and not a back-up, so it would be wise to shut down the chip just in case they can get the info form the other end. All of the recently released games with online capabilities have a DNAS check which checks to see if the game is an original or not. the last backup that worked online with no problems was Midnight Club II. I bought Tiger Woods 2004 when it came out, and havent had any problems getting online at all...because I have the original.

I am currently beta-testing Socom II, and finished the Final Fantasy XO beta a couple of weeks back. Socom II works without a hitch. I had problems setting up FFXI though, and only solved the problem by shutting down the modchip before the installation, and also when you play the game, as I think the hard drive detects it and holds that information.

Side note, if you do end up getting the hard drive and your PS2 is chipped, be aware that the 2 do not work well together. I had many instances where games would not start and I got the disc read error, and the problem was solved immediately when I removed the hard drive.

So, to answer your question....Yes, you can have a modchip and network adapter and still play online, only if you have the original.

*Edited to add that there is now a switch you can install on your Xbox to shut down the modchip on that also so you can play Xbox Live*

i just modded my ps2 with a messiah2pro this week and it's great. really sucked to get in though. not opening the console but soldering. soooo tiny. if you're not experienced in solding, make sure you have someone do it for you.

here's a pic of the install

some ps2 games wont work online if you're chipped b/c of sony's DNAS. that's their protection thing. just have to turn off the chip to play. it's supposed to check to see if the disk is original like gom0511 said but i've heard that sometimes it still blocks you if you have the original too.

so where do you get hdd's from and prices ? or do i just buy a standered pc one ?

i think that you have to pick up the hd from sony but it might only be in japan or not even out yet

The hard drive for the PS2 isn't out yet. Won't be until the game gets released next year. Supposedly FFXI Online will come pre-installed on the hard drive for $100. When I beta-tested the game they sent a hard drive out to us as the game runs right off of it, no disc needed. We do get free ones when they are commercially released though!

Like ForeverUnknown, I have a Messiah2Pro also, and it's hands down the best no swap chip out there. Besides the previously mentioned HD snafu, I havent had any problems with games not working yet. I had someone install mine though, wouldn't think of soldering it in myself as I know i'd mess it up.
