Windows 8 BSOD error, PC keeps restarting

Recommended Posts

It has been app. one month since I am getting this problem. I have Windows 8 Release Preview and when I start the PC, immediately after the boot screen, it gives BSOD error and then suddenly restarts and I couldn't read the error. I think it says something like Cache_Memory and today when I was checking it, it has nothing but just "You can search for this error online later:" and then blank.

What do I do??

Try using BlueScreenView to get the exact error message. While BSODs are supposed to indicate hardware problems, which it may be, it is more likely that it is a driver problem. The BlueSceenView logs should give you a better idea of what the exact error message is and what to search for. If you can't figure it out, post the BSOD message (or better yet, your minidump) here and someone may be able to help you.

But how do I use my PC now since it keeps restarting and I forgot to mention, I cant even install Windows 7 because the thing happens, so basically I cannot use my PC, because of that BSOD error, it just keeps restarting the PC.

You can't install Windows 7 by booting through the install dvd/usb?

No. It gives the same BSOD error and then restarts!

Something is wrong with your hardware. Reseat your RAM, maybe swap out the HDD too to see if it's not your drive going bad.

Reseated both RAMs, changes their positions, cleaned them, tested each stick separately, but still the same problem.

Then it is quite unlikely to be Windows 8 (or drivers) causing the problem. Remember how I said that BSODs are supposed to indicate hardware problems? This is, unfortunately, probably one of those situations.

If you can manage to post a copy of (at least one of) your minidumps that Windows created when it BSOD'd, that would still be helpful. Although Windows won't start, its possible that Ubuntu, Debian Rescue, or some other Linux live CD may be able to, in which case you should copy everything in your Windows\minidump folder to a flash drive or some other storage medium. Alternatively, you could pull your hard drive out and connect it to another machine to get a copy of the minidumps.

When Detection said to test each stick of RAM independently, he was probably talking about running Memtest86+, not just trying to start Windows with one stick and then the other.

Yep memtest86+ is the best bet, and it's also possible that both sticks are faulty although unlikely they would both go at once unless the PSU / Board has damaged them

Also try things like replacing SATA cables and basically unplugging everything that is not needed to a basic install

Agreed: it could be other hardware components instead. RAM just seems most likely at the moment. Without knowing the exact BSOD we can only guess.

    • Same, price was right for my Home, laptop, phone. Works great!
    • Brave and Firefox. I’ve been using them as my primary browsers for a while now, perfect combo
    • They want Ring 0 access. Should be a hard no. A middle ground needs to be found.
    • WFP can be a bit buggy. I switched to the new SocketFilter when 7.22.7 came out. I haven't had any issues so far.
